DURHAM, N.C. – Duke sophomores Anthony D'Alessandro and Tito Nava were named all-stars in their respective summer leagues and headline this week’s summer baseball recap.

D’Alessandro leads the Atlantic Collegiate League in walks, and Nava is 3-1 with a 2.79 ERA in the Colorado Collegiate League.

While a total of eight Blue Devils, including Team USA ace Marcus Stroman, are back on campus training for the 2012 season, several others are representing Duke well in their leagues. Sophomore Matt Berezo is among the Prospect League’s best infielders, and Aaron Cohn and Mike Rosenfeld are carrying the Westhampton Aviator offense in the Atlantic Collegiate League.

Sophomore reliever Josh Ruffin has also emerged as the ace of the Gambrill Athletics bullpen, and Freshman All-America Chris Marconcini is a middle-of-the-order hitter in the top offense in the Valley League.

Read on to find out more about Duke’s players in summer baseball.

Chase Bebout
Junior – RHP
Wilson Tobs (Coastal Plain League)
Pitching Stats: 8 starts, 1-6, 4.34 ERA, 45.2 IP, 37 K, 18 BB, .276 B/Avg.
Bebout has given the Tobs plenty of innings this summer, throwing 45.2 frames in the Coastal Plain League. He averages 5.2 innings per start and has gone at least five frames in all eight starts this summer. The 6-6, 200-pound right-hander is among the top 10 in the league in both innings pitched and strikeouts.

Jordan Betts
Sophomore – 3B
Forest City Owls (Coastal Plain League)
Batting Stats: 35 games, .197 AVG (23-for-117), 4 Doubles, 3 HR, 13 RBI, 14 R
Betts has won the starting third base job for Forest City, thanks in part to improved defense. Betts, who started all 56 games at third base for Duke as a freshman last season, has gone 14 consecutive games without an error.

Jeff Kremer
Junior – C/1B
Wilson Tobs (Coastal Plain League)
Batting Stats: 34 games, .198 AVG (18-for-91), 8 doubles, 2 triples, 9 RBI, 13 R, 16 BB, .333 OBP
While Kremer’s batting average is nearly 150 points lower than the team-leading .337 average he posted during his sophomore season, he is still making solid contact and finding a way to get on base. Despite the .198 batting average, Kremer owns a .333 on base percentage thanks to 16 walks. He has struck out just 13 times all summer for an average of 8.54 plate appearances between strikeouts, which is the second-best average on the team.

Angelo LaBruna
Sophomore – SS
Wilson Tobs (Coastal Plain League)
Batting Stats: 42 games, .221 AVG (29-for-131), 6 doubles, 7 RBI, 19 R, 4 SB
LaBruna put together back-to-back three-hit games last week for Wilson and started his team-leading 40th game in the process. LaBruna is the only player on the Tobs roster to play in all 42 games and the first to reach the 40-start plateau. LaBruna’s defense has been irreplaceable, as the 5-10, 160-pound shortstop has just two errors in his last 16 games.

Chris Marconcini
Sophomore – OF/1B
Harrisonburg Turks (Valley League)
Batting Stats: 32 games, .276 AVG (32-for-116), 7 doubles, 1 triple, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 20 R, .361 OBP
A 2011 Freshman All-America, Marconcini remains entrenched in the heart of the Turks lineup. The 6-5, 200-pound outfielder and first baseman owns a .276 batting average and has scored 20 runs while batting third, fourth or fifth in nearly every game. He has a hit in seven of his last eight games as Harrisonburg has maintained its three-game lead for first place in the VBL.

Matt Berezo
Sophomore – INF
Butler BlueSox (Prospect League)
Batting Stats: 37 games, .273 AVG (39-for-143), 4 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 11 RBI, 22 R, 7 SB
Berezo has emerged as the tablesetter for Butler. He leads the team with seven stolen bases and ranks second in hits, runs scored, walks, slugging percentage and OPS. Berezo strung together a nine-game hitting streak from June 30 until July 9 that raised his average to .302, but has seen that number drop to .273 after three straight hitless games. Berezo had been held without a hit in back-to-back games just twice before his recent slump, however, so expect him to pull through over the final month of the Prospect League season.

Aaron Cohn
Sophomore - INF
Westhampton Aviators (Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League)
Batting Stats: 27 games, .293 AVG (22-for-75), 4 doubles, 2 HR, 13 RBI, 14 R, 6 SB
Cohn is on a tear in Westhampton and has raised his batting average to .293 on the summer. He drove in six RBI in three games last week, including a four-RBI day that included a two-run homer in a 12-8 win over Riverhead. Cohn’s recent hot streak has vaulted Westhampton into first place in the ACBL’s Hampton Division and put the Aviators just one game behind ACBL leader Jersey for the league’s best record.

Anthony D'Alessandro
Sophomore - OF
North Jersey Eagles (Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League)
Batting Stats: 19 games, .146 AVG (7-for-48), 3 RBI, 4 R, 9 SB, 23 BB
D’Alessandro, an ACBL All-Star, leads the Atlantic Collegiate League with 23 walks and leads the Eagles with nine stolen bases. He has been caught stealing just once and has also played errorless defense in 34 chances in the outfield.

David Putman
Senior - RHP
Quakertown Blazers (Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League)
Pitching Stats: 5 APP, 2 saves, 3.86 ERA, 7.0 IP, 10 K, 6 BB
The strikeouts keep coming for Putman, who has now fanned 10 batters in seven innings. One of Duke’s best relievers in pressure situations last season, Putman has allowed only seven hits in his seven innings. He has six strikeouts in his last four innings.

Mike Rosenfeld
Sophomore - C
Westhampton Aviators (Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League)
Batting Stats: 25 games, .282 AVG (20-for-71), 3 doubles, 1 HR, 11 RBI, 10 R, 6 SB
Rosenfeld has been consistent all summer and sports a .282 average with 11 RBI, 10 runs and six stolen bases (without being caught). He opened July on a hot streak, going 5-for-12 in his first four games, but has not played since July 10.

Josh Ruffin
Sophomore – RHP
Gambrills Athletics (Maryland Collegiate League)
Pitching Stats: 7 APP, 1-0, 1 save, 3.66 ERA, 19.2 IP, 11 K, 11 BB, 13 hits
Ruffin is the ace of the Gambrills bullpen, logging a 3.66 ERA over his 19.2 innings out of the bullpen. He has allowed just 13 hits during that span and has allowed just one run – and three hits – over his last 11 innings. Ruffin’s 1.22 WHIP is also the third-lowest on the team.

Tito Nava
Sophomore – RHP
Denver Bombers (Colorado Collegiate League)
Pitching Stats: 3-1, 1 save, 2.73 ERA, 26.1 IP, 32 K, 12 BB
Along with being named a Colorado Collegiate League Mid-Season All-Star, Nava was picked for the CCBL’s Overall All-Star Team and will represent the league when they take on the 2010 NBC World Series Champion Liberal Bee Jays on July 29-30.

Ryan Munger
Junior - C
Rome Thunderbolts (New York Collegiate Baseball League)
Batting Stats: 16 games, .189 AVG (7-for-37), 2 doubles, 3 RBI, 3 R, .318 OBP
Munger has the highest fielding percentage of Rome’s three catchers. He has made just one error all summer while catching a total of 111 innings. The rising junior went 1-for-2 with a run in one of his three games last week.

David Perkins
Sophomore – INF/OF
Mystic Schooners (New England Collegiate Baseball League)
Batting Stats: 17 games, .164 AVG (9-for-55), 2 doubles, 3 RBI, 6 R
Perkins is still finding his way in the NECBL, but has shown signs of life recently with hits in six of his last nine games. Splitting time between third base and the outfield, Perkins is batting 31 points higher in July than he did in June.
