Game One: Duke 14, Coppin State 0

DURHAM, N.C.
– Freshman Andrew Istler, freshman Dalton Brown and sophomore Josh Ruffin combined on a five-hit shutout, leading Duke to a 14-0 win over Coppin State on Tuesday in game one of a doubleheader at Jack Coombs Field.

Istler (4-3) started and went four innings, striking out a career-high six batters without issuing a walk. Istler held the Eagles to four hits on the day. Brown then tossed four scoreless frames of his own, holding Coppin State to just one hit while striking out a career-high four hitters. Ruffin then finished off the shutout, pitching a scoreless ninth without giving up a hit.

Duke (18-29) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Right fielder Grant McCabe started the inning with a single to left. After Istler drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch, center fielder Will Piwnica-Worms sent an RBI-single through the left side to score McCabe from second. Catcher Mike Rosenfeld followed with an RBI-double to the wall in left center. Shortstop Jordan Betts and first baseman Andy Perez then had back-to-back sacrifice flies to drive in Piwnica-Worms and Rosenfeld.

Piwnica-Worms added a two-run double to center with two outs in the second to put the Blue Devils up 6-0.

Betts singled to left to begin the third. Betts would then move to second on a wild pitch before stealing third. Back-to-back one-out walks to left fielder David Perkins and second baseman Mark Lumpa loaded the bases. Third baseman Angelo La Bruna then sent a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Betts, putting Duke ahead 7-0.

In the fourth, Perez had a sacrifice fly to left and Perkins added a two-run single up the middle to extend the Blue Devil lead to 10-0.

Perez would then save a run in the top of the fifth with a great defensive play. With runners at first and third and two outs on the board, Perez made a diving stop to his right on a hard-hit grounder, hopped to his feet and tagged first to keep the Eagles scoreless.

Perkins added an RBI-single with two down in the sixth to make it an 11-0 ballgame.

Istler drove in La Bruna on an RBI-groundout to short in the seventh to give Duke a 12-0 advantage.

Perkins dropped a one-out double down the left field line in the bottom of the eighth. Lumpa followed with an RBI-double to left. Two batters later, McCabe brought Lumpa home with an RBI-single to center to account for the final margin.

Piwnica-Worms finished 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored, while Perkins was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run. Game Two: Duke 4, Coppin State 3 (7 innings)

DURHAM, N.C.
– Left fielder David Perkins hit a walk-off home run with one out in the seventh to lead Duke to a 4-3 win over Coppin State on Tuesday in game two of a doubleheader at Jack Coombs Field.

Perkins picked a great time for his first long ball of the season. With the game tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Perkins came to the plate with one out on the board. After hitting long foul balls down both lines, Perkins connected with a 1-2 offering and sent his game-winning homer over the wall in left field. It was the second career home run for Perkins.

Catcher Reed Anthes gave Duke a 1-0 lead in the second on a two-out, RBI-single up the middle.

First baseman Mike Rosenfeld crushed a 1-0 pitch to deep left field for a two-out, solo home run in the third, giving the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead. It was the third long ball of the season for Rosenfeld.

Coppin State (1-47) threatened to score in the fourth but Duke lefty Dillon Haviland struck out catcher Jordan McNair swinging to get out of a bases-loaded jam.

Duke (19-29) got out of another jam in the fifth. With runners on first and third and no outs, the Eagles tried to pull off a double steal but second baseman Dawan Smith was cut down at the plate. Reliever Drew Van Orden then struck out shortstop Zach Hawk for the second out of the inning. Van Orden would then pick off center fielder Mike Wright at second to end the frame.

A Duke error led to two Eagle runs in the sixth and Myles Taylor tacked on an RBI-double to give Coppin State a 3-2 lead.

Designated hitter Jeff Kremer drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom half of the sixth. After Marcus Stroman came on to pinch run for Kremer, second baseman Mark Lumpa reached on a bunt single. Stroman would then steal third to get 90 feet closer to scoring. The stolen base paid off as third baseman Angelo La Bruna lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Stroman to tie the game at 3-3.

Haviland pitched well in his first start of the season, lasting a season-long four scoreless innings. Haviland had a career-high six strikeouts while limiting the Eagles to just two hits. Freshman Sarkis Ohanian (1-0) earned his first career win after working a scoreless seventh with two strikeouts.

Perkins and Rosenfeld both homered for Duke, while Anthes had a hit and an RBI. Lumpa added a hit and a run, La Bruna had an RBI and Stroman scored a run for the Blue Devils.

Paul Hawk (0-9) took the loss after giving up two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings of relief.

The Blue Devils will travel to UNC Greensboro on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. game. Duke will then host rival North Carolina in its final home series of the year this weekend at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
