Stroman a Finalist for Premier Player Trophy

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke junior right-hander Marcus Stroman is among five finalists for the 2012 Premier Player of College Baseball Award. The Premier Player of College Baseball trophy is one of four major awards presented by the Premier Players Sports Foundation.

Fans can now vote for Stroman for the 2012 Premier Player of College Baseball Award at The five candidates are now in a poll that fans can vote for the overall winner of The Premier Player Trophy.  The poll closes June 30.

Stroman was drafted with the 22nd overall pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2012 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft on Monday, becoming Duke’s first-ever first round pick in school history.

Stroman, who was named to the 2012 Louisville Slugger All-America Team and to the All-ACC First Team, is the 14th Blue Devil to be drafted in the last six years. He was the first player taken from an ACC school in this year’s draft.

Stroman, a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist, led all NCAA pitchers in strikeouts with 136 and finished second in strikeouts per nine innings (12.49). Stroman went 6-5 with a 2.39 ERA in 14 starts this season.

A native of Medford, N.Y., Stroman ranked first in the ACC in innings pitched (98.0), fifth in ERA (2.39) and 10th in opponent batting average (.231). In ACC games only, Stroman finished first in innings pitched (76.0), first in strikeouts (99), first in strikeouts per nine innings (11.72) and 10th in ERA (2.49).

Stroman’s 136 strikeouts in 2012 are the fifth-most in a single season in Duke history. His 136 Ks compared to just 26 walks gave him a 5.23 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the year. In his 10 ACC starts, Stroman had 99 strikeouts against 18 walks.

Stroman’s 290 career strikeouts put him at fourth on Duke’s all-time strikeouts list.

Stroman’s 2.39 ERA is the sixth-lowest in a single season in the aluminum bat era (since 1974) in Duke history. His 3.27 career ERA is the second-lowest in school history in the aluminum bat era and the sixth-lowest all-time.
