PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The doubles team of junior Hanna Mar and sophomore Beatrice Capra won two matches on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Riviera All-American Championship. The 19th-ranked duo will compete again on Friday for a chance to reach the semifinals at the Riviera Tennis Complex in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
In the first round of the main draw, Capra and Mar downed Ema Burgic and Jordaan Sanford of Baylor, 8-6 before edging the third-ranked Annie Goransson and Anett Schutting of California, 8-5 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Mar and Capra are slated to face No. 21 Simona Synkova and Veronica Popovici of Wyoming on Friday at 9 a.m. PST in the quarterfinals.
In the singles back draw, senior Mary Clayton and junior Marianne Jodoin both took their matches to the third set before falling to ranked opponents. Clayton fell to No. 47 Ellen Tsay of Stanford, 1-6, 6-2, 1-6, while Jodoin was outlasted by No. 39 Khunpad Issara of Pepperdine, 4-6, 6-2, 1-6.
