DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke men's baseball team travels to Charlottesville, Virginia this weekend, May 10-12, to face the Virginia Cavaliers in a three-game series.  Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with senior Chase Bebout to learn more about the Lake Worth, Fla., native.

GoDuke.com: What has been your proudest moment at Duke?
Chase Bebout: The character that all of my teammates have had throughout the years. When I came here, I was a really incomplete person myself. The seniors kind of pulled me through my freshman year and sort of built me into the person that I am today. Hopefully, I can do that for the freshmen coming through. I just like to instill leadership into others as much as I can and give back to what previous seniors have given to me.

GoDuke.com: What is your favorite part about being a Duke student-athlete?
CB: Just competing on the field day in and day out. We play 50, 60 games a year. Every single day we get to compete somewhere and that is always fun to me.

GoDuke.com: What is the most misunderstood thing about baseball?
CB: From a pitchers standpoint, whenever I tell people we had a game or a weekend series, they assume that a pitcher would have thrown every single day. If you are a starter, you throw once a week, twice in a week at the most. That is one thing that people can’t understand why I don’t throw everyday as a starting pitcher.

GoDuke.com: What has been your favorite class that you have taken at Duke?
CB: My favorite class was my entrepreneurship class that I took with Carl Nordgren. He just brings so much energy and charisma to every single class. Mixed with that, we had a bunch of student-athletes in that class and we were able to create our own company. That was one of the neatest experiences that I have ever had.

GoDuke.com: Tell us about a time when you first started playing baseball?
CB: That goes way back to when I was three or four and started playing T-Ball. The funny thing is that my first T-Ball team, 12 kids or so on a team, I think 10 or 11 of them ended up going to top D-1 colleges. I have a few friends, including Devon Travis who are in pro ball right now and a bunch of guys who are all over the place, two N.C. State, two UNC. We have had a pretty privileged group and I guess some pretty good coaching.

GoDuke.com: If you could choose anyone, who would you choose as your mentor?
CB: My mom. I have grown up with her since I was seven when my dad passed away. She has been the most incredible person in my life by far. I really enjoy when people use their athletic platform to do things beyond that, so anyone who uses their platform for the benefit of others.

GoDuke.com: What sport other than your own would you play?
CB: I really enjoy golf, even though I haven’t played it that much. I feel like even when you get to a competitive level it is pretty nerve wracking, but just relaxing out on the course is always fun. I also enjoy tennis for its individualism. Baseball is such a team sport, tennis is more of an individual mental toughness sport.
