DURHAM, N.C. – A total of 20 Duke baseball players are set to participate in various summer leagues across the country, including nine who will represent the Blue Devil program in the renowned Cape Cod League.

“I am excited to see so many of our players now headed to all corners of the country to compete in the very best collegiate summer leagues," said head coach Chris Pollard. "I am particularly proud to see nine of our players participating in the Cape Cod Baseball League. The level of development our guys will achieve in these top leagues will be a key component as we look to take the next step in the development of Duke Baseball in 2014.”

Juniors Angelo La Bruna and Mike Rosenfeld return to the Cape Cod League for the second consecutive summer. La Bruna rejoins the Orleans Firebirds, where he hit .260 with five home runs and 16 RBI in 35 games last summer, while Rosenfeld will play for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks in 2013. Rosenfeld hit .344 with seven doubles in 17 games during the 2013 campaign at Duke before suffering an injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the season.

In total, the Firebirds will feature four Blue Devils this summer as junior Jordan Betts, redshirt sophomore Chris Marconcini and sophomore Trent Swart join La Bruna in Orleans, Mass. Betts, a second team All-ACC selection, and Marconcini combined for 34 doubles, 15 home runs and 86 RBI this season, batting in the heart of the Blue Devil order. The ace of the Duke staff as a sophomore, Swart posted a team-best 2.75 ERA in 13 starts to go along with 71 strikeouts.

Sophomore hurlers Andrew Istler and Sarkis Ohanian will also team up with Rosenfeld on the Hyannis roster. Istler made 28 relief appearances this season, totaling eight saves, and Ohanian appeared in 22 games with 30 strikeouts in 29.2 innings of work.

Rookies Kenny Koplove and Michael Matuella round out the Duke contingent headed for the Bay State as Koplove heads to Chatham Anglers and Matuella will play for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. Two key freshmen on Duke’s roster this season, Koplove started 45 games at shortstop and hit .288 with 23 RBI. Matuella appeared on the mound in 22 games, starting seven and posting a 4-4 record while allowing just nine extra base hits in his rookie campaign.

Duke will have two representatives in the both California Collegiate League (CCL) and New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) as well as the Valley Baseball League (VBL). Right-handers Dalton Brown and Drew Van Orden return to their home state of California to play for the Conejo Oaks and Santa Barbara Foresters of the CCL, respectively. Sophomore lefties Garrett Hayward and Remy Janco travel north for the NECBL, while infielders Andy Perez and Jalen Phillips will team up on the Harrisonburg Turks roster in the VBL.

A second team All-ACC honoree, Perez enjoyed an outstanding 2013 campaign, leading the team in batting average (.316), hits (67), triples (5) and stolen bases (18).

Rounding out the Duke summer ball contingent is right-hander Josh Ruffin (Vienna River Dogs – Cal Ripken League), right-hander Conner Stevens (Cincinnati Steam – Great Lakes), outfielder Grant McCabe (Denver Bombers – MHCBL), infielder Matt Berezo (Prospect – Butler Blue Sox) and catcher Reed Anthes (Sun Belt – Atlanta Crackers).
