DURHAM, N.C. – Highly touted outfielder Evan Dougherty, one of five Duke baseball incoming freshmen from the state of Florida, will don the Blue Devil uniform starting in the fall of 2014.
Ranked the 320th prospect nationally by Perfect Game, the 6-1 outfielder from Fort Myers, Fla., is a product of Bishop Verot High School. Perfect Game also tabs Dougherty among the top 70 prospects at his position nationally and one of the top 70 overall prospects in the state of Florida.
“Evan Dougherty is a nationally-ranked outfielder with a unique combination of speed and power,” said head coach Chris Pollard. “He ran a 6.6/60 at the Perfect Game National event in Minneapolis, and has demonstrated an advanced feel for hitting.”
Boasting top-of-the-order speed, Dougherty has good range in the outfield and utilizes a simple swing approach to drive the ball to all fields. A 2012 and 2013 Perfect Game High Underclass Honorable Mention selection, he hit .333 for Bishop Verot as a junior, driving in 24 while stroking four doubles, six triples and two home runs.
“Evan competes in one of the top high school programs in Florida, along with playing for the FTB travel organization,” added Pollard. “He has seen quality pitching throughout his high school career and will undoubtedly benefit from those experiences as he makes the jump to ACC baseball.”
