DURHAM, N.C. – Senior right-hander Drew Van Orden has been tabbed one of five players on the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week list after leading the Duke baseball team to a series opening win against No. 19 North Carolina this past Friday.
Van Orden set the tone for the Blue Devils in the series opener, turning in a dominant performance to help Duke to the 3-2 victory over the Tar Heels. The Manhattan Beach, Calif., native struck out a season-high 12 batters without issuing a walk, throwing just 98 pitches over eight complete innings of work.
Van Orden has a strikeout in every inning except the third, and fanned the side in both the fifth and eighth innings. After allowing a lone run in the second, he retired 16 of the final 18 batters he faced, including a streak of 10 straight.
Duke returns to action Tuesday, traveling to Liberty for a 6 p.m. game against the Flames.
