DURHAM, N.C. – Head coach Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to announce the addition of left-hander Luke Whitten to the 2015 roster. A native of Dallas, Texas, Whitten is set to join the Blue Devils this fall.
“I am very excited to welcome Luke Whitten to the Duke Baseball family,” said Pollard. “Luke had a tremendous senior year on the mound. He is a great competitor with an incredibly deceptive arm angle and release point. Luke is also an accomplished student, having been selected as an incoming Duke AB Scholar this coming fall.”
A product of Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas Texas, Whitten lettered four seasons with the Wildcats, earning District Pitcher of the Year, District 12-4A MVP and all-area honors. This past season, Whitten led Woodrow Wilson to a 15-8 overall mark and 13-1 record in district play. He logged 58.2 innings on the mound, posting an 8-2 record, 0.84 ERA, 83 strikeouts and just six walks.
An excellent student, Whitten was the valedictorian of his graduating class, serving as Class President while also garnering membership to the National Honor Society.
Whitten is one of 14 incoming freshmen to join the Duke baseball program for the 2014-15 campaign. In addition to Whitten, the Duke Baseball Class of 2018 includes pitchers Christopher Koppenhaver (Davie, Fla.), Chris McGrath (Atlanta, Ga.) and Mitch Stallings (Atlanta, Ga.), infielders Justin Bellinger (Weston, Mass.), Daniel Calabretta (Weddington, N.C.), Ryan Day (Phelan, Calif.), Jack Labosky (Clovis, Calif) and Max Miller (Ponte Vedra, Fla.), outfielders Evan Dougherty (Fort Meyers, Fla.), Johnathan Lloyd (Graham, N.C.), James McGhee (Pensacola, Fla.) and Michael Smiciklas (Boca Raton, Fla.), and catcher Peter Zyla (Alpharetta, Ga.).
