Football Turns to Pair of Alumni to Fill Positions

DURHAM, N.C. -- With a pair of openings on the coaching staff following the 2012 season, Duke head coach David Cutcliffe turned to the school’s alumni directory to fill the positions.

The two vacancies were created when Matt Lubick accepted a job at the University of Oregon and Ron Middleton joined the staff with the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars.  Cutcliffe’s journey in finding replacements landed with former Blue Devils Scottie Montgomery and Re’quan Boyette – both familiar faces to the head coach.

Montgomery starred as a wide receiver at Duke in the late 1990s, and served two seasons under Cutcliffe before moving to the NFL’s coaching ranks with the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Cutcliffe convinced the North Carolina native to return to his roots as Associate Head Coach.

“We wanted to hire the best football coach that we could hire and who we thought was the best football coach in America,” Cutcliffe said. “That came to Scottie Montgomery—it started there, nowhere else.”

With Boyette, a two-time Duke captain who rushed for over 1,000 career yards, the proximity was much closer as the former running back spent the 2012 season as a graduate assistant coach with the Blue Devils.
