DURHAM, N.C. – Duke’s women’s cross country team will begin the 2013 season ranked No. 1 in the Southeast Region, as announced today by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Blue Devils improved on last season’s No. 5 preseason regional ranking.

Six of the ten Atlantic Coast Conference schools comprise the Southeast Region, including No. 3 N.C. State, No. 4 North Carolina, No. 8 Wake Forest, and No. 11 Clemson. Boston College ranks third and Syracuse ranks fifth in the Northeast Region, Notre Dame ranks third in the Great Lakes Region, Maryland ranks twelfth in the Mid-Atlantic Region, and Florida State ranks first in the South Region, to round out ACC schools.

Duke captured the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship last year, tallying just 81 points in a field of thirty-six teams. The Blue Devils return five of their top seven starters from the meet, including seniors Juliet Bottorff, Ashley Brasovan and Gabby Levac and juniors Kelsey Lakowske and Carolyn Baskir.

The Blue Devils open the 2013 campaign with the Bull City Classic on Saturday, Aug. 31 against North Carolina Central. The meet begins at 3:46 p.m. in Wallace Wade Stadium. Duke will then travel to Cary, N.C. to compete in the Adidas XC Challenge on Friday, Sept. 20.
