Michael Ryan joined the Duke athletic staff in August of 2005 and acts as the assistant director of facilities and game operations. Ryan and his staff handle the event setup and execution for all 26 Blue Devil athletic programs. Ryan came to Duke from Southern Methodist University where he was an assistant director of athletic facilities and operations for three years. At SMU, Ryan was the game manager for men's and women's basketball and volleyball. He also assisted in all aspects of football game-days and setup, served as the building manager of Moody Coliseum, assisted in overseeing and maintaining the budget and coordinated the maintenance of teh Haggar Tennis Stadium courts.
Ryan also assisted with several special events while at SMU, including the 2004 Republican National Party Final Campaign which featured President George W. Bush, Toby Keith and other prominent figures. Among the other special events he worked were the 2004 Texas Best Robotics Event, the 2002 Men's College Cup, multiple cheerleading events, the Texas high school basketball playoffs and the Global Games Basketball Tournament.
Prior to joining the staff at SMU, Ryan spent seven months at Soutwest Texas State as an atheltic facilities and operations intern. At SWT he assisted in the supervision of game operations for all athletic events and acted as the primary contact and liason between athletic summer camps and housing and dining services. Ryan was also the primary contact and supervisor for all high school events that took place at SWT.
Ryan also spent two years as an athletic facilities and game operations graduate assistant at Wichita State. His event management responsibilities included assisting in parking, security, payment of officials, scoreboard and sound-system maintenance and venue setup. He earned his master's degree in education from Wichita State in the spring of 2002.
Ryan attended Kansas State as an undergraduate, earning a bachelor's of science degree in the fall of 1999. While at K-State he worked as a statistician for the Wildcat Sports Network and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
Ryan, and his wife Maggie were married in the summer of 2006. The couple resides in Durham with their two daughters, Taylor and Madison.
