DURHAM, N.C.-Duke University senior longstick midfielder CJ Costabile has been selected as one of five finalists for the 2012 Tewaaraton Award presented by Panama Jack. The Tewaaraton Award is presented annually to the nation's top male and female lacrosse player.

The finalists are invited to Washington D.C. for the 12th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony, May 31, at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian. Costabile is one of two representatives from the ACC as 2011winner Steele Stanwick also was picked as a finalist. Rounding out the list are Peter Baum of Colgate, Willy Manny of Massachusetts and Loyola's Mike Sawyer.

Duke's career leader in ground balls, Costabile is the fifth Blue Devil to be named a finalist - Kevin Cassese (2002, 2003), Zack Greer (2008), Matt Danowski (2005, 2007, 2008), Ned Crotty (2009, 2010). Overall, Duke has been represented among the five finalists nine times. Matt Danowski and Ned Crotty both captured the honor, winning in 2007 and 2010, respectively. He is the first Duke long pole to earn the distinction as a finalist for the award.

Costabile, a three-time All-America selection, has helped anchor Duke's faceoff game and defense throughout his career. The ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, the New Fairfield, Conn., native currently leads the ACC and ranks eighth nationally in ground balls with 6.6 per game and 113 overall. His 345 career ground balls are the most in Duke history as he surpassed goaltender Joe Kirmser's 327 ground balls in the ACC semifinal win over Maryland.

A two-time All-ACC selection, Costabile has picked up at least five ground balls in 14 of his 17 games this season and nine-plus pickups in five contests. He has had equal success at the X in 2012, winning at least 50 percent of his draws 10 times. Overall for the year, he is 119-of-231 (.515) at the faceoff X. Defensively Costabile has been outstanding, ranking second on the team with 18 caused turnovers, including a season-best three in Duke's come-from-behind win over Marist.

After helping Duke to its second ACC Tournament title in the previous four seasons, Costabile was named to the All-ACC team for the second consecutive season and became the fourth Blue Devil in program history to be named to the All-ACC Tournament Team three times in his career. Costabile was the first freshman in ACC history to earn the ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player award after helping guide Duke to the 2009 ACC title.

Costabile is equally as dangerous on offense, compiling six goals and four assists for 10 points this season. He currently leads all current long poles in career points with 21 goals and 20 assists for 41 points, including overtime game-winner to lead Duke to the 2010 NCAA Championship.

Duke, the No. 3 overall seed opens NCAA Tournament action against Syracuse on Saturday, May 12 at 12 p.m. The game will be broadcast live by ESPN. The winner advances to the NCAA Quarterfinal in Philadelphia, May 20.
