DURHAM, N.C. -- The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its annual regional awards Tuesday, naming Duke women’s tennis head coach Jamie Ashworth the Carolina Region Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year and senior Hanna Mar the Carolina Region Senior Player of the Year. For Ashworth, the regional coach of the year honor is the fifth of his career.
Mar, currently ranked 36th by the ITA in the association’s singles poll, has established herself as a fierce competitor in Duke’s lineup, amassing a 28-10 singles record this season. Owning a near-perfect ACC mark of 12-2, the Burr Ridge, Ill., native leads Duke in conference wins. Mar played a pivotal role in Duke’s ITA National Team Indoor title earlier in the season, not dropping a match during the tournament. Mar also clinched the singles point in the hotly-contested final against UCLA, which garnered her Most Outstanding Player honors at the conclusion of the event. With a singles win against No. 30 South Carolina over the weekend, Mar moved within three matches of the 100-win barrier in singles play. A three-time All-ACC honoree, Mar also contributed in doubles throughout the season, accumulating 22 wins and teaming with sophomore Beatrice Capra to rank fifth in the ITA doubles national poll.
Duke continues to thrive under the guidance of Ashworth, reaching its 11th conference final this season with Ashworth at the helm. The Blue Devils sat atop the ITA team rankings throughout the season, holding the No. 1 ranking for five consecutive weeks and remaining among the top 10 since the month of January. Ashworth saw three student-athletes, including Mar, Capra and junior Ester Goldfeld named to the All-ACC first team this season. With Ashworth as the team's head coach, Duke advanced to the round of 16 of the NCAA Team Championship for the seventh time in as many years after defeating both East Tennessee State and South Carolina, 4-0, over the weekend.
The Blue Devils travel to Athens, Ga., to face No. 14 Clemson Thursday, May 15, in the round of 16.
All regional award winners are eligible for the ITA national awards.
