Duke Meets Maryland for 3rd Time in 2012
Duke advanced to its eighth NCAA semifinal after a convincing 17-6 win over Colgate in the quarterfinals ... The Blue Devils meet Maryland for the third time this season after splitting the two previous meetings ... The Terrapins took the regular season contest, 10-7, while Duke edged the Terps in the ACC Tournament, 6-5 ... This is the second straight season Duke and Maryland have played in the NCAA semifinals.

NCAA Tournament Notes

  • Duke advanced to its eighth NCAA lacrosse championship weekend and its sixth consecutive - (1997, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 & 2012)
  • Duke currently ranks tied for eighth in Division I NCAA lacrosse history with eight showings in the NCAA semifinals
  • Duke is 24-14 all-time in its 16 NCAA Tournament appearances adn 3-4 in NCAA semifinals
  • Duke earned the third seed for the second time in program history after garnering that distinction in 2009 ... The Blue Devils also earned a top-eight seed in 1994 (8), 1995 (5), 1997 (5), 1998 (7), 1999 (4), 2000 (7), 2002 (7) and 2005 (2), 2007 (1), 2008 (1), 2010 (5), 2011 (5).

Duke Advances to 6th Consecutive NCAA Semifinal
Duke advanced to championship weekend for the sixth conseuctive season ... Only four other schools have qualified for the semifinals at least six straight seasons since the NCAA Division I championship began in 1971 ... Duke is one of just three schools to get to championship weekend at least six consecutive seasons since 1990.

Danowski Heads to 6th Straight NCAA Semifinal
With a 17-6 victory over Colgate, Duke head coach John Danowski earned a spot in the NCAA semifinals for the sixth straight season ... He is one of two head coaches - the other being Syracuse's John Desko - to guide a team to championship weekend in each of his first six seasons at the helm of a program ... Desko did the same from 1999-04 ... Danowski's six straight and Maryland head coach John Tillman's two in a row are the lone active streaks.

Duke - Maryland Series History
Duke and Maryland are meeting for the 77th time since the first game in 1940 ... The Terrapins hold a convincing 57-19 lead in the series and are 6-4 against the Blue Devils in the past 10 contests ... The two teams have met four times in the NCAA Tournament, including in the NCAA semifinals in 2011, with both teams coming away with two wins ... Duke and Maryland split the two previous contests this season with Duke winning in the ACC Tournament and Maryland coming away with the regular season victory ... The Terrapins ended the Blue Devils' season last year in the NCAA semifinals.

A House Divided as Haus Brothers Face Off
Freshmen midfielder Will Haus will face older brother John for the third time this season ... John is a junior midfielder at Maryland ... Their father, John, was a two-time All-American at North Carolina and currently serves as the head coach at Lebanon Valley College.

Danowski in Rematches
Head coach John Danowski is 18-5 overall in rematches at Duke ... Danowski is 3-1 in third meetings with opponents in a season and 0-1 against Maryland when playing it for a third time in a season ... He is 10-3 when playing a regular season opponent again in the NCAA Tournament ... In rematches since 2007, Duke is 7-0 against North Carolina, 5-1 versus Virginia, 2-0 against Notre Dame, 1-0 against Cornell, Loyola and Syracuse, 1-2 versus Maryland and 0-2 against Johns Hopkins.

Seniors Leading Duke in NCAA Tournament
In each of Duke's two NCAA Tournament wins this season, the group of seniors has been outstanding ... Duke's group of 11 seniors has combined for 12 goals and seven assists for 19 points, both game-winning goals, 35 ground balls, seven caused turnovers and 14-of-20 faceoff victories ... Robert Rotanz, Justin Turri, Michael Manley and CJ Costabile have led the way for the Blue Devils ... Rotanz and Turri both have nine points apiece, while Manley has an assist, eight ground balls and four caused turnovers ... Costabile has 23 ground balls, one caused turnover and has won 14-of-20 draws.

  • Duke is 15-4 overall and captured its ninth ACC regular season title and seventh ACC Tournament championship ... All four losses came on the road against teams ranked in the top 20
  • Duke finished the year with a 9-0 record at home and owns a 10-game home win streak
  • Jordan Wolf is the team's points leader with 63 points (32g, 31a) ... Robert Rotanz is the top goal scorer with 38 goals and has 46 points overall ... Christian Walsh and Josh Dionne also have 40-plus points with 48 and 42, respectively
  • CJ Costabile is atop the league and seventh nationally in ground balls per game (7.16)
  • Duke's top four goal scorers - Josh Dionne, Robert Rotanz, Jordan Wolf and Christian Walsh rank among the top eight goal scorers in the ACC.
  • Redshirt senior Michael Manley leads the defense with 26 caused turnovers
  • Dan Wigrizer, Kyle Turri and Mike Rock all have started at least twice this season between the pipes ... Duke is allowing 8.89 goals per game overall as a team

Maryland advanced to the semifinal round for the second consecutive year with an 11-5 win over Johns Hopkins ... Joe Cummings headlines the offense with 30 goals and 15 assists, while Owen Blye has 37 points (17g, 20a) ... John Haus has 31 points ... ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Year Jesse Bernhardt anchors the defense with 32 caused turnovers and 56 ground balls ... Maryland is allowing just 7.0 goals per game in the NCAA Tournament and held Duke to just six in the previous meeting ... At the faceoff X, Curtis Holmes and Charlie Raffa have shared the load ... Holmes is 116-of-232 (.500), while Raffa is 55-of-100 (.550) ... In goal, Niko Amato sports a 7.35 goals against average and a .543 save percentage.

Duke's Defense Stifles Colgate Offense
Duke's defense was outstanding against the nation's second-ranked offense as it held Colgate to its fewest goals all season with six ... The Blue Devils forced a season-high 23 turnovers and recorded a Duke season-best 16 caused turnovers.

Last Time Out
Colgate scored consecutive goals to make it 4-2 with 3:58 remaining in the first quarter before Duke rattled off 13 straight in a span of 21:40 ... Robert Rotanz led all scorers with five goals and an assist, while CJ Costabile had 15 ground balls and 14 faceoff wins ... Dan Wigrizer made nine saves as Duke held the Raiders without a goal for 26:14.

Last Time Duke and Maryland Met
Duke and Maryland last met in the ACC Tournament semifinals with the Blue Devils coming away with a 6-5 victory ... Josh Dionne had a hat trick to lead the way for Duke and the Blue Devils held off the Terps to earn the one-goal victory en route to the ACC Tournament title ... Dan Wigrizer had 10 saves and four ground balls in the win.

Duke at the Faceoff X
Duke dominated faceoffs in the first two games, winning 64 percent (32-of-50) of the draws ... Four different Blue Devils have taken faceoffs in the two games with CJ Costabile leading the way with 14-of-20 ... Junior Greg DeLuca has won 6-of-12 restarts ... Costabile has won 53 percent of his faceoffs and Duke has won the faceoff battle 13 times this season, going 10-3 in those contests ... Duke is 2-1 when losing the battle at the X.

Man-Down Defense Improving
Duke's man-down defense has improved over the last half of the season ... After the first 10 games of the season, Duke's ranked last in the NCAA in man-down defense,  allowing opponents to score 53 percent of the time ... In the past nine games, Duke is holding opponents to a 29 percent success rate and only eight man-up scores after allowing 25 in the first 10 games.

Scoring in the 2nd and 3rd Quarters
After playing the first quarter to a 4-4 draw against Colgate, the Blue Devils outscored the Raiders 13-1 ... Overall, Duke has outscored its opponents 133-80 in the second and third quarters combined and 69-40 in the third quarter alone this season ... The Blue Devils have been outscored five times in the second quarter and four times in the third overall this season ... During the past 13 games, Duke has been outscored in those quarters just four times combined.

Reaching the Perfect 10
Since 2007, Duke is 84-4 when scoring at least 10 goals in a game ... The Blue Devils are 10-19 when being held to fewer than 10 scores ... Duke is 22-17 when allowing 10 goals in a contest and is 72-6 when holding opponents under 10 goals ... All four of the remaining teams scored at least 10 goals in each of their NCAA Tournament games ... Virginia was the lone team after two rounds to earn a victory with fewer than 10 goals.

Since 2006, Duke has amassed a 70-26 (.729) record versus ranked opponents ... This season Duke is 9-4 against ranked opponents with three of the four losses coming to top-10 opponents ... One Goal Games
Duke improved to 69-61 all-time in games decided by one goal  when it held off Maryland 6-5 in the ACC Tournament Semifinal ... Duke played a program-high seven one-goal games in both 1994 and 1997 ... Duke is 11-5 in one-goal games under John Danowski and 3-0 in 2012 ... Duke is 9-7 in one goal games against Maryland.

Danowski Wins No. 300

CJ Costabile a Tewaaraton Finalist
Senior CJ Costabile was selected as one of five finalists for the 2012 Tewaaraton Award ... He is the fifth Blue Devil player to earn the distinction as a finalist, joining Kevin Cassese, Matt Danowski, Zack Greer and Ned Crotty ... Danowski and Crotty captured the honor in 2007 and 2010, respectively.

Senior CJ Costabile recently was named one of 10 finalists for the 2012 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award ... An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Rotanz Having a Career Year
Senior midfielder Robert Rotanz is having an outstanding senior season ... The Westport, Conn., native has a career-best 38 goals and eight assists for 46 points ... Rotanz has scored at least four  goals in five games this season and has seven hat tricks overall ... He netted a career-high five goals in the win over Colgate in the quarterfinals and had three versus Syracuse in the opening round.

Costabile Picking Up Grounders
Senior longstick midfielder CJ Costabile ranks among the nation's top ground ball guys ... Costabile faces off regularly for the Blue Devils and is a key member of the defense ... He currently ranks second among active Division I players in career ground balls with 368 ... His three GBs against Maryland in the ACC semifinal pushed him past Duke goaltender Joe Kirmser's 327 pickups, the most in Duke lacrosse history.

Wolf and Walsh Are Duke's Top Scoring Duo
Sophomore attackmen Jordan Wolf and Christian Walsh have combined for 111 points for the year to rank tied for eighth overall and sixth among the 16 NCAA Tournament teams ... Colgate's Peter Baum and Ryan Walsh are the top tandem with 157 points ... Virginia's Steele Stanwick and Chris Bocklet are the top duo in the ACC with 124 points.

Scoring Trio
Duke's top three goal scorers have combined for 106 of Duke's 203 goals for 48 percent of the team's total for the season ... Walsh, Dionne, and Rotanz are the top goal scoring trio in the ACC and fourth among the NCAA field of 16 teams.

CJ Dangerous off the Faceoff
Senior long stick midfielder CJ Costabile has been a key member of the faceoff midfield throughout his career ... Whether on the wing or at the X, Costabile is always a threat to create goals ... In his career, the New Fairfield, Conn., native has 14 goals directly after a faceoff, including the game-winner in the 2010 NCAA title game ... He has seven assists after winning a faceoff or picking up the ground ball on the wing ... Overall, 21 of his 41 points have come directly from the X. 

Wigrizer Hitting His Stride
After missing three games to injury and losing the starting job in three other contests, junior goaltender Dan Wigrizer is playing his best lacrosse of the season ... Playing the majority of minutes in the past 11 games, he is sporting an 8.48 goals against average and a .532 save percentage in that stretch.

Wigrizer Part of Elite Fraternity
Junior Dan Wigrizer is part of a small fraternity of goaltenders who captured NCAA Championships as freshmen between the pipes ... He is one of six freshmen goalies to achieve the feat ... Wigrizer joins Rodney Rullman (Virginia, 1972), Kevin Mahon (Johns Hopkins, 1974), Quint Kessenich (Johns Hopkins, 1987), Derek Kenney (Virginia, 1999) and current Duke volunteer assistant coach John Galloway (Syracuse, 2008) ... Only Galloway went on to win another national title in his career as the Orange captured the 2009 crown ... Wigrizer ranks 10th amongst current Division I goalies in minutes played (2,541) and second amongst junior goaltenders.
