Duke Earns No. 5 Seed; Will Host Delaware on May 14

DURHAM, N.C.-The Duke University men's lacrosse team has been tabbed as the No. 5 overall seed for the 2011 NCAA Tournament. The Blue Devils will host Delaware on Saturday, May 14 at 5 p.m. live on ESPNU from Koskinen Stadium.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. Gates will open at 4 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at GoDuke.com or by calling the ticket office at 1-877-375-3853. Due to graduations on Saturday, parking will be limited. Parking will be available on a first-come first-serve basis in the Bassett Drive/Grounds Lot, 751 Lot, and Science Drive visitor's lot. Overflow parking will be sent to parking garage four. Parking in Whitford Drive will be by list only.

This will be the first time the Blue Devils and Blue Hens will meet in the NCAA Tournament. The two squads will square off for the 13th time overall with Delaware leading the series 7-5. Duke defeated Delaware most recently in 2007, winning 12-7 in Durham.

Duke earns the fifth seed for the fourth time in program history after garnering that distinction in 1995, 1997 and 2010. The Blue Devils also earned a top-eight seed in 1994 (8), 1995 (5), 1997 (5), 1998 (7), 1999 (4), 2000 (7), 2002 (7) and 2005 (2).  All-time by round, the Blue Devils are 10-3 in first round action, 6-5 in quarterfinal play, 3-3 in semifinals and 1-2 in national championship games. 

The reigning NCAA Champions, Duke is 12-5 overall and will be making their 15th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.  Duke previously earned berths in the postseason event in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 and owns an all-time tournament record of 20-13. The Blue Devils have reached the national semifinals six times (1997, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010) advanced to the championship game in 2005 and 2007 and ultimately won the NCAA title in 2010. Duke enters the 2011 postseason having won 14 of its last 18 NCAA tournament games.

Senior Zach Howell headlines the Duke offense with 53 points from 38 goals and 15 assists. Freshman Jordan Wolf has 45 points off of 27 goals and 18 assists, while classmate Christian Walsh has 19 goals and 11 helpers for 30 points. Overall, the Blue Devils have four players with 20-plus goals and six players with 20-plus points on the year.

Senior Tom Montelli helps to anchor Duke's defense that is allowing 9.05 goals per game. Montelli leads the defensive effort with 24 caused turnovers and is second in ground balls with 49. Junior CJ Costabile has 17 caused turnovers and is the leader at the faceoff X. Costabile has won 91-of-172 restarts for a .529 win percentage and has a team-best 83 ground balls. Freshman Brendan Fowler also has been strong in faceoffs, winning 77-of-132 (.583). In goal, sophomore Dan Wigrizer sports a 9.52 goals against average and a .540 save percentage. He is averaging 10.3 saves per game in his 15 contests.

Delaware earned the Colonial Athletic Association's automatic qualifying spot after beating UMass 9-7 in the CAA title match. The Blue Hens are 11-6 overall and are making their sixth appearance in NCAA postseason play. Eric Smith leads the charge on offense with 23 goals and 18 assists for 41 points. Grant Kaleikau has a team-high 27 assists and 39 points overall. Dan Cooney handles faceoff duties and has won 172-of-324 (.531) restarts with 84 ground balls. Pat Dowling anchors the defense with 19 caused turnovers, while Noah Fosser is between the pipes with a 9.20 goals against average and a .530 save percentage. The Blue Hens are 3-5 all-time in NCAA Tournament action and are 4-4 on the road this season.

The winner of the game will advance to play the winner of the Notre Dame/Penn contest at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. That quarterfinal contest is set for Sunday, May 22 at 2:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
