Duke Hosts Delaware in NCAA First Round

Duke welcomes No. 14 Delaware to Durham for the NCAA Tournament first round on May 14 ... The Blue Devils and Blue Hens will square off for the first time in the NCAA Tournament ... Joe Beninati (PxP) and Jaime Munro (Analyst) will be on the call for ESPNU ... The winner advances to the quarterfinal round in Foxborough, Mass. on May 22.

Coach John Danowski Buying Tickets

Head coach John Danowski is buying tickets for all Duke students in attendance on Saturday ... Former Blue Devil lacrosse players also will garner free admission from Danowski.

NCAA Tournament Notes

  • Duke is making its 15th overall appearance and fifth consecutive in the NCAA Tournament
  • Duke has won its previous four NCAA Tournament games dating back to May 23, 2009
  • Duke is 20-13 all-time in NCAA Tournament play
  • The Blue Devils have advanced to the national semifinals six times overall, including four of the past five seasons (1997, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, & 2010)
  • Duke has won 14 of its past 18 playoff games, with three of the losses coming against Johns Hopkins in the 2005 and 2007 title games and the 2008 semifinals

Duke/Delaware Series History

Duke and Delaware are meeting for the 13th time overall and for just the second time since 1990 ... The Blue Devils and Blue Hens last squared off in 2007 with Duke emerging with a 12-6 win in Durham ... This will be the first time the two teams have met in the NCAA Tournament.

Danowski Headlines Duke's All-ACC Selections

Duke head coach John Danowski was named the 2011 ACC Coach of the Year after guiding the Blue Devils to the ACC title and a 3-0 record in league play ... This is the second time Danowski has been honored as the top coach in the ACC by his peers ... Junior CJ Costabile and freshman Jordan Wolf were named to the All-ACC squad ... The honor is the first for both Blue Devils and Wolf was one of three freshmen chosen.

Scouting Duke

The Blue Devils (12-5) are coming off of a 10-6 win at Jacksonville in the regular season finale ... Senior Zach Howell paces the offense with 38 goals and 15 assists for 53 points ... He has registered at least one 24 of the past 25 outings ... Freshman Jordan Wolf is second with 45 points from 27 goals and 18 assists, while rookie Christian Walsh has 19 goals for the year ... Sophomore David Lawson has come on strong, netting eight goals in the final three games of the year ... Junior CJ Costabile takes the majority of faceoffs for the Blue Devils, winning 53 percent (91-of-172) of his restarts ... Costabile is tops on the squad in ground balls with 83 ... Freshman Brendan Fowler is winning 58 percent of his faceoffs (77-of-132) and has 36 ground balls ... Senior Tom Montelli has 49 ground balls and senior Terrence Molinari anchors the defensive midfield with 32 ground balls ... Montelli leads the defense with 24 caused turnovers ... In goal, sophomore Dan Wigrizer is 10-5 overall with a 9.52 goals against average and a .540 save percentage ... He has 10-plus saves in nine games this season and is averaging 10.3 saves per game this season.

Scouting Delaware

Delaware enters the NCAA Tournament after winning automatic bid from the Colonial Athletic Association ... The Blue Hens are 11-6 overall on the year and ranked 14th in latest coaches poll ... Delaware defeated No. 19 UMass 9-7 to win the CAA Tournament ... Eric Smith headlines the attack with 41 points from 23 goals and 18 assists ... Grant Kaleikau has a team-high 27 assists and 39 points overall, while Sean Finegan has 26 points ... Dan Cooney leads the faceoff midfield, winning 53 percent (172-324) of his restarts ... Cooney also is tops on the Blue Hens with 84 ground balls ... Pat Dowling anchors the defense with 19 caused turnovers and 46 ground balls, while Connor Fitzgerald has 17 caused turnovers and 41 ground balls ... In goal, Noah Fossner has played all but 18 minutes this season ... He has a 9.20 goals against average and a .530 save percentage and is averaging 10.2 saves per game.
