Duke Takes on Notre Dame in NCAA Quarterfinal

Duke heads to Foxborough, Mass. to take on Notre Dame on May 22 ... The Blue Devils and Fighting Irish will square off for the third time in the NCAA Tournament with both teams having one win ... Duke and Notre Dame also squared off in the regular season ... Eamon McAnaney (PxP), Quint Kessenich (Analyst), and Mark Dixon (Sideline) will be on the call for ESPNU ... The winner advances to championship weekend in Baltimore, Md. on May 28-30.

NCAA Tournament Notes

  • Duke is making its 15th overall appearance and fifth consecutive in the NCAA Tournament
  • Duke has won its previous five NCAA Tournament games dating back to May 23, 2009
  • Duke is 21-13 all-time in NCAA Tournament play and 6-4 in NCAA Quarterfinal games
  • The Blue Devils have advanced to the national semifinals six times overall, including four of the past five seasons (1997, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, & 2010)

Duke/Notre Dame Series History

Duke and Notre Dame will be facing off for the 10th time overall and for the second time this season ... Duke is 6-3 all-time against Notre Dame ... The Blue Devils and Irish met earlier this season (Feb. 20) in the Sunshine Classic in Jacksonville, Fla. with Notre Dame coming away with the 12-7 win ... The Blue Devils and Irish have met twice in the NCAA Tournament ... Notre Dame won the first outing, 12-10, in 1995, while Duke captured the next with a 6-5 overtime victory in the 2010 National Championship game.

Danowski Headlines Duke's All-ACC Selections

Duke head coach John Danowski was named the 2011 ACC Coach of the Year after guiding the Blue Devils to the ACC title and a 3-0 record in league play ... This is the second time Danowski has been honored as the top coach in the ACC by his peers ... Junior CJ Costabile and freshman Jordan Wolf were named to the All-ACC squad ... The honor is the first for both Blue Devils and Wolf was one of three freshmen chosen.

Scouting Duke

The Blue Devils (13-5) defeated No. 14 Delaware 15-14 in the first round on May 14 ... Senior Zach Howell paces the offense with 42 goals and 16 assists for 58 points ... He has registered at least one goal 25 of the past 26 outings ... Freshman Jordan Wolf is second with 50 points from 30 goals and 20 assists, while rookie Christian Walsh has 19 goals for the year ... Sophomore David Lawson has come on strong, netting eight goals in the final three regular season games of the year and 10 points in the past four outings ... Junior CJ Costabile takes the majority of faceoffs for the Blue Devils, winning 53 percent (97-of-184) of his restarts ... Costabile is tops on the squad in ground balls with 93 ... Freshman Brendan Fowler is winning 57 percent of his faceoffs (82-of-145) and has 37 ground balls ... Senior Tom Montelli has 50 ground balls and senior Terrence Molinari anchors the defensive midfield with 35 ground balls ... Montelli leads the defense with 24 caused turnovers ... In goal, sophomore Dan Wigrizer is 10-5 overall with a 9.52 goals against average and a .540 save percentage ... He has 10-plus saves in nine games this season and is averaging 10.3 saves per game this season ... Backup goalie Mike Rock earned the start in the first round, making a career-high 12 saves  to post the victory ... He is 3-0 this season in his three starts with a 9.06 goals against average and a .492 save percentage ... Duke is allowing 9.33 goals per game this season.

Scouting Notre Dame

Notre Dame enters the NCAA Quarterfinal round as the No. 4 seed ... The Fighting Irish defeated Penn, 13-6, in the opening round in South Bend, Ind. and is 11-2 overall ... David Earl paces the offense with 25 points from 15 goals and 10 assists, while Sean Rogers has 24 points and Zach Brenneman has 21 ... Earl also leads the team in caused turnovers with 12 ... Notre Dame is averaging 9.77 goals per game for the year ... The Irish sport the top-ranked defensive team, allowing just 6.54 goals per game ... Kevin Ridgway helps to anchor that defense with 11 caused turnovers ... Sophomore goaltender John Kemp ranks second and third nationally in goals against average (6.58) and save percentage (.606), respectively ... Syracuse is the lone team to have scored double digit goals on Notre Dame this season ... The faceoff game is led by the duo of Liam O'Connor and Jake Marmul ... O'Connor has won 54 percent (81-of-150) and Marmul is successful 56 percent of the time (60-of108) ... Both are the ground ball leaders with 39 and 28, respectively ...

Duke in the NCAA Tournament Statistics

After one round of the NCAA Tournament, Duke is tops in goals per game and second in points per game ... The Blue Devils' 15 goals against Delaware were the most by any of the 16 teams ... Duke also is first in shot percentage (.500) and second in ground balls (36.0/gm) ... Individually,  Zach Howell is second in goals (4.0), fourth in points (5.0) ... CJ Costabile is tops in ground balls (10.0) and Jordan Wolf is fourth in points (5.0).

Duke in the Month of May

The Blue Devils have played 109 games in the month of May and sport a 52-56-1 all-time record in the fifth month ... Under head coach John Danowski, Duke is an astounding 16-3 in the month of May ... Duke has not lost a game in May since the 2009 NCAA Semifinals against Syracuse on May 23.

Starting last week prior to the matchup with Delaware, Duke's short stick players all gathered for what the team calls "shooting camp" ... The players come out and work on shooting for about an hour and it paid off as the Blue Devils led all teams in the first round with a .500 shooting percentage ... Duke scored on half of it shots and missed the cage just 10 times for a .667 shot on goal percentage ... Overall on the year, Duke ranks  second nationally in shot percentage (.344).

Blue Devils Have Balanced Scoring
