Divers Continue Strong Showings at Olympic Trials

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Two days after advancing to the finals of their respective synchronized diving events, Duke's Abby Johnston and Nick McCrory also secured spots in the final round of their individual events Tuesday evening at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Federal Way, Wash.

McCrory had an impressive day of competition in the men's 10-meter event, leading the field after the preliminary round with a score of 512.80. Despite falling to second behind synchro partner David Boudia in the semifinals, McCrory continued to deliver on his second list of dives, earning four 10s on an armstand back 2 somersault tuck for 94.40 points. The Chapel Hill, N.C., native finished the evening with a back 2 ½ somersault with 2 ½ twists for 102.60 points, bringing his cumulative total to 1043.95 after two rounds of competition.

Boudia leads the way heading into Saturday's finals with a score of 1083.75, followed by McCrory in second and Thomas Finchum (974.95) in third. The top two divers at the end of the final round will represent the United States at the Olympic Games in London. Saturday's 10-meter finals will be broadcast live on NBC at 4 p.m. ET.  

Tuesday's action also included the preliminary and semifinal rounds of the women's 3-meter springboard competition. Johnston scored 293.60 points in the prelims and pushed her cumulative total to 563.95 at the end of the semifinals to place 11th and qualify for Saturday's finals. Meanwhile, incoming Duke freshman Kendall McClenney placed 21st in the 3-meter prelims with a score of 246.00.

Cassidy Krug sits atop the leaderboard of the women's 3-meter event after two rounds of diving with 718.85 points, followed by Christina Loukas (679.65) and Kassidy Cook (653.25). The women's 3-meter finals are slated for 1 p.m. ET on Saturday and will be broadcast Sunday, June 24 beginning at 3 p.m. ET on NBC.

McCrory and Johnston are also set to return to the boards Thursday, June 21 for the finals of the men's 10-meter synchro and women's 3-meter synchro competitions.
