DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University men’s lacrosse head coach John Danowski was named the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Division I Coach of the Year at the annual IMLCA Coaches Convention in Baltimore, Md. Danowski led the Blue Devils to the 2013 NCAA Championship, his second as the Duke head coach.

A veteran coach, Danowski was named the Duke head coach in 2007 and has since led the Blue Devils to unprecedented success. In Danowski's seven years at the helm of the Blue Devil lacrosse program, he has compiled an impressive 111-29 record in leading Duke to six ACC regular season titles and four ACC tournament titles, seven appearances in the national semifinals, three in the NCAA title match and ultimately to the 2010 and 2013 national titles.

A winner of 80 percent of his games at Duke, the individual awards Blue Devil players have garnered is equally impressive. In only seven seasons, Danowski helped mentor 44 All-America selections, 22 All-ACC choices, two Tewaaraton Trophy winners, two USILA Attackman of the Year award recipients, a USILA Defenseman of the Year, a USILA Midfielder of the Year and 11 USILA Scholar All-America picks.

This past season, Danowski guided the Blue Devils to a 16-5 overall record en route to the NCAA title. After Duke started the year 2-4 and falling out of the rankings, Danowski righted the ship as the Blue Devils rattled off nine straight wins heading into the ACC Tournament.

After a loss to then No. 1 North Carolina in the opening game, Duke finished the season with five consecutive victories, including a commanding 16-10 win over Syracuse in the NCAA title match. He became the first coach in lacrosse history to lead his team to seven consecutive championship weekend appearances in his first seven seasons at the helm.

Under Danowski’s watch in 2013, Duke landed two players – Brendan Fowler and David Lawson – on the USILA All-America first team and had seven All-Americans overall. Fowler also was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year and the NCAA Championship Most Outstanding Player for his excellence at the faceoff X.

In addition to the many on-field accolades, Duke was equally successful in the classroom. Fowler was voted the ACC Men’s Lacrosse Scholar Athlete of the Year as the Blue Devils landed nine players on the All-ACC Academic Team and 26 to the ACC Academic Honor Roll.

Overall for his career, Danowski is 330-168 to rank second in career victories among active coaches. He is one of four coaches to have at least 100 wins with two different programs, while his .663 win percentage ranks seventh among active Division I coaches.
