Sports Performance Coaching Staff
Associate Director of Sports Performance/Head Olympic Sports Performance Coach (Baseball, M & W Soccer, Volleyball, M Tennis)
Dan Perlmutter joined the Duke Sports Performance staff in February of 2009. Overseeing training for all Olympic Sports through the Murray Building training center, he works directly with baseball, men's and women's soccer, men's tennis, and volleyball. He supervises a staff of three full-time coaches, one part-time coach, and two full-time interns that cover 23 men’s and women’s teams.
Perlmutter has coached numerous All-American and All-ACC athletes during his time at Duke, including 2011 Herman Trophy winner and 2011 MLS Draft overall 1st Pick Andrew Wenger (Montreal Impact), and All-American and MLB 1st Round Draft Pick Marcus Stroman (Toronto Blue Jays).
Perlmutter’s prior experience includes five years as the Assistant Director of Strength & Conditioning at Harvard University (2004-2009), as well as stints at Holy Cross in 2004, and Springfield College from 2002-04. In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, he worked with numerous professional athletes in baseball, football, soccer, ice hockey, and track & field. He has also served as a consultant to the USTA Competition Development Center in Boston, and contributed to a variety of professional publications in the field. Throughout his time at Duke, he has maintained direct ties with former Blue Devil athletes playing professionally in their respective sports, hosting athletes for off-season training, and consulting on training programs throughout the year.
Perlmutter holds a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from George Washington University (1998) and a master’s degree in applied exercise science from Springfield College (2004). He is a Registered Strength & Conditioning Coach and a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength & Conditioning Association, as well as a USA Weightlifting Level 1 Club Coach.
A native of Massachusetts, Perlmutter lives in Durham with his wife Amy, their two daughters Mia and Jordan, and their son Miles.
