DURHAM, N.C. -- Five Duke fencers will compete in the US Fencing North American Cup this Friday through Monday, Oct. 12-15, in St. Louis, Mo.

Representing Duke at the national competition will be junior men's saber Nick Carothers, freshman saber Charles Copti, sophomore saber Eugene Chung, junior epee Dylan Nollner and freshman women's epee Isabella Barna. The three men's sabers will fence on Friday and the men's and women foilists on Sunday.

Nollner is coming off a sophomore season in which he won silver at the U-20 Junior Olympics, placed 10th at the Junior World Championships with Team USA and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year where he placed 15th. Nollner, who is Duke's top returning epee for 2012-13, posted a 33-11 record in his sophomore season and took second place at the NCAA Regionals.

Carothers enters his junior season with a 36-23 career record. He advanced to the 2011 NCAA Regionals as a freshman but did not see action last season as a sophomore. Carothers already has experience at North American Cup events, having competed in the January, 2012, NAC in Portland, Ore.

Chung was one of Duke's top sabers in his freshman season, posting a 47-28 record in 2012 and a 15th-place showing at NCAA Regionals. He helped the Duke sabers to a 21-7 record and twice won double-digit bouts in Duke's dual meets last season, including a 14-4 showing at the Philadelphia Invitational and a 17-7 outing at the Northwestern Duals.

Copti, a men's saber, and Barna, a women's epee, will compete in their first events as Blue Devils this weekend. Copti is a native of Wyckoff, N.J., and a product of Ramapo High School, while Barna hails from Bend, Ore., and Summit High School. Copti has plenty of experience competing at the national and international levels with a gold-medal showing in the junior division at the Junior Olympics in Memphis, Tenn., another gold medal in juniors at the Summer National Championships in Atlanta, Ga., and top-10 finishes in juniors at the Summer National Championships in Reno, Nev., and the North American Cup in Dallas, Texas. He also competed at the London World Cup where he placed 12th in the cadet division. Barna was also a well-traveled prep fencer as a member of the US Cadet World Team. She notched top finishes at the Junior Olympics and Cadet World Cup and a third-place outing at the Junior World Cup.
