EASTON, Pa. - Duke junior Dylan Nollner won the men's epee competition at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Saturday at Lafayette College and was one of four Duke fencers to earn bids to the NCAA Championship.
Seven total Duke fencers earned top-10 finishes at the Mid-Atlantic/South Regional, including the aforementioned four, men's epee Edward Chen, women's epee Isabella Barna and women's saber Kodia Baye-Cigna. At-large NCAA Championship bids for Duke's remaining regional participants will be announced next week.
Nollner went 18-3 on the day and won 10 of his last 11 bouts in the final round of competition. The Ogden, Utah, native has now earned three consecutive top-three finishes at the NCAA Regional and will advance to his third consecutive NCAA Championship. Nollner, who won the silver medal at the 2012 Junior Olympics and competed with the U.S. Junior World Team, finished third in the regional event as a freshman and second as a sophomore.
With Nollner's top finish, Duke has had a Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Champion in five consecutive seasons following three-time NCAA Champion Becca Ward's four straight first-place regional finishes.
Senior women's epee and team captain Emily D'Agostino placed fifth and will advance to her fourth consecutive NCAA Championship. D'Agostino, a two-time All-America, is only the seventh fencer in Duke history to advance to four NCAA Championships and the third Duke female to accomplish that feat.
D'Agostino's epee teammate Sarah Collins placed eighth, notching her second straight top-10 finish at the event.
Senior women's saber Sean Cadley, who led Duke with a 67-9 record during the regular season, placed ninth. It was a career-best finish for the senior, who in her final season led Duke in both wins and winning percentage. Saber teammate Kodia Baye-Cigna, a junior, placed 10th, a career-best finish for her as well.
Up next for the Blue Devils is the 2013 NCAA Championship on March 21-24 in San Antonio, Texas. Duke has sent at least five fencers to the NCAA Championships in four consecutive seasons and notched to-10 overall finishes at the event in each of the last three seasons.
