DURHAM, N.C. – Led by matching 11-4 showings from freshman foil Julia Lee and freshman saber Angelica Hubbard and a 10-5 performance from sophomore epee Isabella Barna, the Duke women’s fencing team went 3-2 at the Philadelphia Invitational Sunday at The Coach Dave Micahnik Fencing Center.

Duke improved to 4-4 on the season following wins over NJIT (25-2), Haverford (17-10) and Sacred Heart (14-13) and losses to Cornell (16-11) and Penn (19-8). The three wins came on the heels of the men’s team 5-1 record on Saturday, the first day of the competition.

Lee won her first six bouts and helped the foils stake three wins on the day, while Hubbard keyed the sabers to a 3-2 showing as well. The foils picked up commanding wins of 9-0 versus NJIT, 8-1 against Sacred Heart and 7-2 against Haverford, while the sabers also shut out NJIT and edged Haverford 6-3 and Cornell 5-4.

The epees went 1-4 despite a 10-5 day from Barna and eight wins from freshman Rita Somogyi.

Senior women’s saber Kodia Baye-Cigna fenced in just eight bouts but won six of those, including all three in a narrow 5-4 saber win over Cornell. Trailing 4-3 with just two bouts remaining, Hubbard and Baye-Cigna teamed up to post back-to-back wins and secure the saber victory.

Through two meets, Lee and Barna lead the women’s team with 18-9 and 17-10 records, respectively. Baye-Cigna, meanwhile is 12-6 to lead the sabers in winning percentage, while Hubbard leads that squad with a 15-12 record.

Up next for the Blue Devils is a two-day trip to the Northwestern Duals on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 1-2 in Evanston, Ill. That precedes the annual Duke Home meet on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 8-9 in Card Gym on Duke’s West Campus.
