DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women’s fencing team topped four of its five opponents, including rival North Carolina, on the final day of the Duke Home Meet Sunday afternoon in Card Gym.
In addition to the 16-11 win over the Tar Heels, the Blue Devils topped Air Force (18-9), MIT (16-11) and Brandeis (18-9) while falling to No. 8 Temple (16-11). The performance improves the women’s record 17-9 on the year.
Led by a 10-2 performance from freshman Julia Lee, the foils went 4-1 with their lone loss coming against Temple. Anisha Mukherjee and Samantha Lee both recorded eight wins as well as their squad led all Duke weapons in victories.
Duke’s top overall performance came from junior captain Sarah Collins, who in only her second meet of the season went 10-1 to spur the epees to wins over Air Force, North Carolina and Brandeis. In just two meets this season, Collins has posted a 39-8 record while winning 27 of her past 29 bouts. Isabella Barna also added a 9-5 mark to the epees’ success, while Rita Somogyi went 7-7.
In saber action, Kodia Baye-Cigna logged 10 victories to help the squad to a 3-2 showing. Baye-Cigna’s performance came on the heels of a flawless 16-0 outing on the final day of the Northwestern Duals this past weekend.
The Blue Devils will get a weekend off from team competition before returning to the strip for the Temple Duals on Feb. 22. Several Duke fencers will compete in the Junior Olympics on Feb. 14-17 prior to that.
