DURHAM, N.C.Becca Ward went undefeated and led the Duke women’s fencing team to the Saber trophy and a victory over North Carolina at the 13th annual Duke Home Meet in Card Gym on Sunday.

Ward was a perfect 6-0 in bouts against No. 7 Northwestern and North Carolina and now boasts a team-leading 54-3 record. Ward, the 2009 NCAA Women’s Saber Champion and a 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, led Duke’s saber squad to a 9-0 sweep over North Carolina that contributed to a 21-6 victory. Despite Ward’s perfect 3-0 showing and the sabers’ 6-3 win over Northwestern, however, the Wildcats still managed to squeak by with a 14-13 victory over the Blue Devils on their home floor.

Northwestern defeated both opponents at the Duke Home Meet and took home both the foil and epee trophies. The Wildcats’ only weapon loss was the 6-3 defeat at the hands of Ward and Duke sabers Sean Cadley, Maia Hutt and Kodia Baye-Cigna.

Duke still managed to roll North Carolina and pick up a half point in the Continental Tire “Battle for the Blues” standings. The half point, combined with the Duke men’s team’s half point from the win over North Carolina on Saturday trims North Carolina’s lead to 10-4 in the annual all-sports competition.

Blue Devil freshman Mary Tung led Duke’s epee squad with a 5-1 record and was a perfect 3-0 against Northwestern. Tung improved to 41-16 while the epees are now 16-3 as a group.

Dana Rosen, meanwhile, paced the Duke foils with a 4-2 record.

Up next for select Blue Devils is a trip to the Junior Olympics on Feb. 18-21 in Dallas Texas.
