DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke women
captured both the epee and saber trophies at the annual Duke Home Meet to help
the team to a 4-1 record on Sunday in Card Gym.
Despite suffering their first loss of the year, Duke's sabers finished 4-1 and amassed
a tournament-best 34 points and a +90 touch differential to lead all teams.
Duke's epees, meanwhile, were one of only two squads at the entire dual meet to
net 30 points. The sabers and epees posted 4-1 records while the foils posted a
3-2 mark on the way to team wins of 25-2 over Air Force, 22-5 over North
Carolina, 15-12 over Temple and 22-5 over Brandeis.
Duke's lone loss came against defending NCAA Champion Penn State, 18-9. The
Nittany Lions became the first team all season to win all three weapons against
Duke and the first team all season to defeat Duke's sabers. The Blue Devil
sabers now boast a school-record 25-1 record, besting the 22-1 mark they put
together last season.
Leading the sabers was two-time NCAA Champion and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist
Becca Ward, who posted a flawless 15-0 record on the day to improve to 69-1 on the year. Ward is on pace to break her own Duke regular season wins record of 72 that she set in 2010,
a mark she could easily break at the upcoming Temple Duals on Feb. 25. Also for
the sabers, Sean Cadley finished 10-5 and Kodia Baye-Cigna went 9-6.
For the epees, two-time All-American Emily D'Agostino tied for Duke's
second-best individual record of the day at 12-3. She ended the meet with six
straight victories, sweeping both Temple and Brandeis to vault her squad to the
top of the epee standings. Freshman Sarah Collins continued her dominant
inaugural campaign with a 10-5 record, while Lauren DeLucia and Mary Tung split
time to combine for an 8-7 record.
Three of Duke's four foilists posted winning marks, including Lily Shepard who
went 12-3 and Dana Rosen who went 10-5. Jessica Kang also finished above .500
with a 7-6 record.
The Blue Devils will compete at the Junior Olympics on Feb. 17-20 in Dallas,
Texas, before returning to NCAA Duals action on Feb. 25 at Temple. All of Duke's
regional qualifiers will then head to the Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals on March
10 in an attempt to move on the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
