DURHAM, N.C. - Duke fencer Isabella Barna placed 27th out of 200 international competitors at the Bratislava Junior Epee World Cup in Slovakia.

Barna, a freshman from Bend, Ore., reached the Table of 32 where she fell, 15-13, to USA teammate Anna Van Brummen. Van Brummen would go on to win the silver medal in women's epee after falling by one point in the championship round.

Barna opened the world tournament by going 5-1 in the first round to receive the No. 37 seed in the single-elimination bracket format. After a first-round bye, she won her first two bouts, defeating Ukrainian Yuliya Svystil 15-8 and Finland's Ester Balint 15-10 to reach the Table of 32.

The performance improves Barna's world ranking to No. 27 and her USA ranking to No. 5. A product of Summit High School, Barna had a decorated prep career prior to Duke, claiming first place at the 2010 Junior Olympics as well as gold medals at the 2009 Grenoble International Tournament in the U17 division and the 2009 USA Fencing National Championships as a U19.

Barna and the Blue Devils open the 2013 fencing season on Jan. 12 at the Penn State Duals.
