DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke men’s and women’s fencing teams head north this Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 25-26, to participate in the Philadelphia Invitational, hosted by Penn at The Coach Dave Micahnik Fencing Center.
The Blue Devil men open the competition Saturday against Lafayette, Drew, Haverford, Sacred Heart, No. 8 Penn and NJIT, while the women take the strip Sunday against NJIT, Haverford, Cornell, Sacred Heart and No. 8 Penn. The Duke men enter the meet 2-3 and the women 1-3 after opening the season two weeks ago at the Penn State Duals.
Leading the Duke men after the opening weekend are freshman foil Joseph Lam (9-5), junior epee Edward Chen (9-6), senior epee Dylan Nollner (8-4) and freshman saber Christopher Monti (8-7). Nollner and Chen helped the epees post a 3-2 record at the Penn State Duals, while Monti and Lam led their respective squads to two wins.
The Duke women boast three fencers who won seven bouts at Penn State, including freshman foil Julia Lee (7-5), sophomore epee Isabella Barna (7-5) and freshman epee Rita Somogyi (7-5). Barna and Somogyi helped the epees finish 2-2 at Penn State, while senior women’s saber Kodia Baye-Cigna also turned in a 6-4 record to help the sabers finish 2-2.
