EVANSTON, Ill. - The No. 10 Duke women's fencing team upset defending NCAA Champion and third-ranked Notre Dame 14-13 as part of a 10-2 showing at that Northwestern Duals on Feb. 4-5 and broke the school record for most wins in a season. The eighth-ranked Duke men finished 5-2 in the two-day event in the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion.

The Blue Devil women (18-3) knocked off the Fighting Irish 14-13 behind a 7-2 effort from the epee squad. The Duke sabers, who stayed unbeaten with a 12-0 showing on the weekend, edged Notre Dame 5-4 befores, but it was the epee trio of Emily D'Agostino, Sarah Collins and Lauren DeLucia that made up the difference in the final score.

The 18 victories by the Duke women are the most in school history, breaking the school record of 17 wins set in 2010 and tied in 2011.

Their only two losses this weekend came at the hands of No. 4 Northwestern and No. 6 Ohio State 17-10. The women shut out three opponents (Cal Tech, Lawrence and Detroit) and defeated two others (San Diego and Cleveland State) 26-1. Their other victories included Stanford 18-9, Wayne State 19-8, Fairleigh Dickinson 22-5 and Stevens Tech 24-3.

The women's sabers, led by two-time NCAA Champion and Olympic medalist Becca Ward, stayed undefeated to improve to 21-0 on the year. That group, which also includes veterans Sean Cadley and Kodia Baye-Cigna - knocked off the saber squads from Northwestern and Ohio State among their 12 wins and are now 43-1 over the last two seasons.

The Duke men took down Wayne State 21-6, Stanford 15-12, San Diego 20-7, Cal Tech 26-1 and Lawrence 25-2. Only No. 4 Notre Dame and No. 5 Ohio State were able to upend the Blue Devils, both by scores of 16-11.

The sabers came through against Stanford, squeaking out a 6-3 win to offset a 5-4 win by the foils and a 4-5 loss by the epees.
