HARRISONBURG, Va. - Duke (6-8, 0-4) outshoots James Madison (8-5) 18-4 while defeating the Dukes 1-0 on Friday, October 12, at the James Madison Field Hockey Complex in Harrisonburg, Va. Sophomore Martine Chichizola scored the lone goal of the contest in the Blue Devil victory.
"I am very pleased with the result tonight and the shutout from our team's defensive efforts, head coach Pam Bustin commented. "We can still sharpen our attacking skills above the 25 yard line. We created many goal scoring opportunities tonight that we must convert to points on the board in the future."
Chichizola's goal came off a penalty corner that took place at the 12:49 mark in the first half. Senior Chelsea Amsley inserted the ball while sophomore Abby Beltrani served as the stopper before the London, England native's shot from just inside the scoring area started low, but deflected of a James Madison stick to soar past the goalie for her first goal of the 2012 season.
The Blue Devils outpaced the Dukes in the penalty corner column 3-1 and Goalkeeper Lauren Blazing picked up one save in the win as the Duke defense held its opponent to four shots on the night. Junior Devon Gagliardi led all players with seven shots while junior Emmie Le Marchand, freshman Aileen Johnson and Chichizola contributed three each.
