MÖNCHENGLADBACH, GERMANY – Duke University junior forward Jessica Buttinger tallied the winning goal to send Canada to a 5-1 victory over Russia Friday, Aug. 2 in 13-16 placement play at the 2013 ERGO Hockey Junior World Cup.

Buttinger scored from open play in the 21st minute of the Canadian squad’s playoff contest against Russia. With the win, Canada advances to the 13th-place match Sunday, Aug. 4 against the winner of Saturday’s game between Ghana and Belgium.

Two other Blue Devils were also in action Friday at the Junior World Cup, as redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Blazing and sophomore midfielder Aileen Johnson took the field with the U-21 U.S. national team in a playoff contest against Australia. Team USA responded with a goal after Australia took an early 2-0 lead, but eventually fell to the Australian squad, 4-1. Blazing, Johnson and the U.S. team will next face the loser of the match between South Africa and Spain Sunday to determine seventh and eighth place in the tournament.
