DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke field hockey program has been named a 2014 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award winner by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, as announced by the organization this week. In addition, the Blue Devils led all ACC institutions with 12 selections on the Division I National Academic Squad.
The National Academic Team Award recognizes those institutions that have achieved a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the first semester of the 2013-14 academic year. Duke joined the other six members of the ACC in receiving the recognition from the NFHCA.
The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2013-14 academic year.
Twelve Blue Devils were tabbed to the Division I National Academic Squad, including three-time recipients Lauren Blazing, Ashley Camano and Emmie Le Marchand and two-time honorees Hannah Barreca, Amanda Kim and Sarah Urdahl. Junior Abby Beltrani, freshman Robin Blazing, senior Paula Heimbach, sophomore Aileen Johnson, freshman Heather Morris and freshman Savannah Story each received the accolade for the first time in their respective careers.
Beltrani, Lauren Blazing, Heimbach, Johnson, Kim and Le Marchand were also named to the All-ACC Academic Team for the 2013 season.
Duke paced the ACC with the 12 selections to the squad, followed by North Carolina (10), Syracuse (7), Wake Forest (7), Boston College (6), Maryland (6) and Virginia (6).
