DURHAM, N.C. – Duke field hockey head coach Pam Bustin and the Blue Devil staff welcomed the addition of seven incoming players to the program for the 2014 campaign. Midfielder/defender Sarah Furey comes to Duke from Mt. Laurel, N.J.

Prior to Duke: A four-year letterwinner at Bishop Eustace, Furey closed out her prep career with 51 goals and 63 assists. She was a two-time first team All-South Jersey selection and a three-time first team all-conference honoree, in addition to earning a spot on the all-state second team for three years. Furey has been a member of the U.S. U17 and U19 junior national teams and a U.S. Futures Elite/High Performance athlete.

What is your favorite field hockey memory?
SF: Winning the state championship two times in four years.
When did you start playing field hockey?
SF: I started playing when I was in fifth grade in the Stick Starz program. Also, in fifth grade, my middle school team needed an extra player so they let me play even though I was a year too young.
Why did you choose Duke?
SF: The players, the coaches, the academics, the weather, the basketball – Duke has it all!
What are your goals for your collegiate career?
SF: To reach my full potential and help Duke win a national championship.
Who has had the biggest impact on your life?
SF: My family - they have supported me through thick and thin since day one. They are my biggest fans and I cannot thank them enough.

Hobbies: Hanging out with my friends and family

Favorite musician: Justin Timberlake
Pre-game ritual/superstition: I have to wear a green headband during games.
What do you plan to major in? Evolutionary anthropology – I would like to become a physical therapist.
If you were to play another sport, what would it be? Lacrosse
Interesting fact about yourself: I spend every summer in Avalon, N.J. with my entire extended family.
Best advice you’ve received: “There is plenty of room at the top, but no room to sit down.”
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Hopefully settled down, married and working in an office as a physical therapist.
