Meghan Norair
Forward l Fredericksburg, Va. l Fredericksburg Academy

Prior to Duke: Norair totaled 79 goals and 51 assists while guiding Fredericksburg Academy to two state titles during her prep career. The two-time all-state player of the year and three-time all-conference player of the year, she has also competed on the national level in the U.S. Futures Elite program as well as in the Junior Olympics Games, where she earned a silver medal. Norair was selected the recipient of the National Futures Championship Barbara Longstreth Sportsmanship Award.

Bustin’s Take: "Meghan will bring an element of speed and unpredictability to our game style. Her work ethic and competitive attitude are the necessities to Duke field hockey success. Meghan's positive attitude is contagious as well as her Duke pride that she shares with her teammates and coaches."

What is your favorite field hockey memory?
MN: Easily Senior Day. I remember winning and then crying like a baby because it was my last game on that field. The underclassmen really made it a great day and I have never loved a team more … so far.

When did you start playing field hockey?
MN: Since my mom was a tennis pro, that was my sport. I got into the field hockey game pretty late but loved it instantly. My freshman year I thought playing on your reverse looked cooler so I tried to do everything that way and it did not exactly work out. But I played whenever I could and quickly learned!

Why did you choose Duke?
MN: This university will not let me settle with just being good. I know that at Duke I will continually be pushed to be a better athlete and student. The goals of the team and the school match my personal aspirations.

What are your goals for your collegiate career?
MN: My team goal is to win at least one NCAA Championship. Personally, I want to reach my potential and be a contributor on the forward line.

Who has had the biggest impact on your life?
MN: My varsity coach Karen Moschetto is truly inspiring. She has a way of uniting a team and getting them to stay on task while balancing fun. She can get people to rally behind anything. “Mosh” is so hilarious and we have so much fun that it is sometimes hard to believe that we are back-to-back state champions. Mosh is one of the strongest and most admirable people I know.

Quick Hitters:
Favorite athlete: Lance Armstrong
Hobbies: Field hockey (obviously), reading, shopping, being with friends and hiking
Favorite movie: Anything with Will Ferrell
Favorite TV show: Gossip Girl
Favorite book: 1984
Favorite musician: Trampled By Turtles
Pre-game ritual/superstition: I try not to be superstitious but it is unavoidable. I have a routine that I stick to on gamedays, which involves a specific lunch. At Duke I am sure that I will come up with some new superstitions to replace the ones I have now.
What do you plan to major in? I am still undecided. However, I am considering something along the lines of international studies, public policy or political science. All I know now is that I love to travel and want that to be a part of my career.
If you were to play another sport, what would it be? Lacrosse. It is such a fun sport and is characterized by similar athletic tendencies as field hockey. You also get to compete with a team, which is so rewarding.
Interesting fact about yourself/Hidden talent: My favorite food is raisins and I can do the worm with my eyebrows.
Best advice you’ve received: When I was still unsure about playing in college my mom said that I would always look back and say “what if” if I decided not to. She told me all the time to “just go for it”. I now apply this to all facets of my life and try to live without any regrets.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I am a well-traveled global citizen doing something that I love with the intention of getting married.

To be a part of the Duke field hockey program is … going to be so much fun! I love to work hard and am beyond honored to have such an astounding opportunity. I am incredibly humbled and can’t wait to meet new people and set new goals.
