Senior Emmie Le Marchand spent the summer months in New York City, where she was involved with the Duke in New York Arts & Media program. She took classes and completed an internship with TED Talks, a series of idea-sharing conferences that take place all over the world. Check out her full blog below.

After 10 exciting, emotional and exhausting weeks in New York City, I was definitely ready to return to Durham and to see some wide open spaces again, particularly the field hockey field.

I participated in the Duke in New York Arts and Media program, which involves taking two classes throughout the summer whilst also doing an internship. Add working out into the mix and my schedule was pretty jam packed!

Here’s what my days looked like:

        - Get up at 7 a.m. and work out before work in the gym or on the purple rooftop track I found in Soho

        - Eight-hour day with my internship at writing posts for their blog, brainstorming ideas in editorial meetings and updating speakers’ biographies

        - Scamper uptown to a class event – we saw Romeo and Juliet at the NY Ballet, had dinner at a jazz club, saw Matilda on Broadway and many other things – or to the Columbia field to meet teammate Grace Christus and play some pick up field hockey with people from all over the city

        - Get back home to eat dinner and do some work for class, whether it be reading, research or writing a paper

In more ways than one I feel like I had a true experience of this city. I worked a full-time job, saw as many tourist highlights as I could imagine and lived the endlessly busy, fast-paced life of a true New Yorker. Am I exhausted? Yes. But am I glad I did it? Absolutely!
