DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke field hockey team will close out the regular season this Saturday, Oct. 30, at 1 p.m. as the Blue Devils take on No. 3 Virginia from Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
Duke (8-9, 0-4 ACC), ranked 14th by womensfieldhockey.com, has won two of its last three games, but is coming off a narrow, one-goal loss at No. 11 Penn State last Saturday. Freshman Emmie Le Marchand tallied a goal in the second half, but the Blue Devils were unable to overcome a two-goal Nittany Lion lead, falling 2-1.
For the season, Le Marchand has paced the Blue Devil attack with eight goals and three assists. Freshman Brenna Rescigno and sophomore Mary Nielsen tie for second on the squad with three goals and an assist each.
In goal, Samantha Nelson has played every minute for the Blue Devils and ranks second in the conference in both saves (66) and shutouts (5).
No. 3 Virginia (14-2, 2-2 ACC) enters Saturday’s match-up on a three-game win streak as the Cavaliers last lost on Oct. 16 against No. 2 North Carolina. UVa’s only losses this season have comes at the hands of ACC foes North Carolina and Maryland.
Virginia is led by Paige Selenski on the year with 22 goals and seven assists, while Elly Buckly comes in second with 13 goals and 10 assists for a Cavalier team which ranks ninth in the country in goals and fourth in goals against average.
