CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Two 15-minute overtime periods were not enough to determine a winner between the Blue Devils and the Cavaliers as No. 6 Duke fell 3-2 at Virginia following the ensuing penalty strokes Saturday afternoon in Charlottesville.

Duke (11-6, 2-3 ACC) dominated the game statistically, firing 28 shots to just five from Virginia (8-11, 1-4 ACC) and leading in penalty corners 14-3 as well. However the Blue Devils trailed twice in the game and could not convert on their opportunities down the stretch.

UVa's Britt Knouse began the scoring with a goal in the second minute off a penalty corner, giving Virginia the early 1-0 lead. Duke would respond 13 minutes later as junior Devon Gagliardi netted her eighth goal of the season on a cross from freshman Jessica Buttinger.

The two teams entered halftime tied 1-1 despite Duke leading in shots 8-2.

Virginia regained the lead in the second half with Rachel Sumfest deflecting in a cross from Elly Buckley in the 41st minute. Duke again had the answer as Blue Devil leading scorer Emmie Le Marchand netted her 14th goal of the season in the 46th minute, assisted by freshman Abby Beltrani.

Duke outshot Virginia 12-1 following the Blue Devils' second goal, but Duke could not break through the UVa defense for the gamewinner. Cavalier starting goalkeeper Jenny Johnstone made 14 saves, including 11 in the second half, to keep Duke off the scoreboard.

Both the first and second overtime periods ended with no change in score. With only penalty strokes remaining to determine the winner, both teams hit their first three attempts to remain tied. However, Virginia converted its fourth stroke and the Blue Devils could not match the effort in their final two attempts as UVa came away with the 3-2 victory.

The Blue Devils next travel to College Park, Md., for the start of the 2011 ACC Tournament, which runs Thursday-Sunday, Nov. 3-6.
