DURHAM N.C. - The Duke women's field hockey team takes on Virginia in the first round of the ACC Tournament today, November 3rd, at 3:30 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the ACC website (www.theacc.com). Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with senior goalkeeper, Micaela Paterson, to learn more about the Cape Town, South Africa native.
GoDuke.com: What TV shows do you keep up with?
Micaela Paterson: I'm addicted to TV shows - really lame ones actually [laughs]. The CW is my channel to watch - "Gossip Girl", "Secret Circle". There's one on ABC Family that's called "The Lying Game". It's a nice break, mindless TV shows.
GoDuke.com: Do you have any embarrassing music on your iPod?
MP: I actually don't have any embarrassing music. It gets used for warm-ups, so I can really afford to have anything embarrassing on there.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite movie?
MP: My favorite movie is a toss-up between "Center Stage" because I did ballet for 11 years and "Finding Nemo".
GoDuke.com: Do you have any superstitions or pre-race rituals?
MP: I like to mix it up all the time because I think that if you get too comfortable with particular rituals, if that for some reason can't be successfully done, then it could ruin your whole [game].
GoDuke.com: What is on your bucket list?
MP: To work in Central Africa, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I'd love to work for a non-profit in Central Africa. My parents are not too happy about that. They think it's safer to just stay at home. And go to Hawaii and watch Pipeline.
GoDuke.com: What is the biggest obstacle you've had to overcome athletically?
MP: Moving to another country and starting over. That was hard adapting to a particular style of coaching, a particular way of playing, what was expected of me, having a goalkeeping coach 24/7 on my back all the time, which is not a bad thing. It keeps me challenged, but it was different from what I was used to - the more relaxed training environment - to it being really intense and serious.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite home-cooked meal?
MP: A good South African braai - it's like a barbecue. We have really good meat called boervors and you have some mashed potatoes.
GoDuke.com: What has been your favorite class at Duke?
MP: I took a really great developmental psychology class with Dr. Maxine. She's really amazing. She makes learning really fun and she's super chill. I like that she's from Hawaii because it's on my bucket list [laughs]. She's an awesome professor, really inspiring. We read the books and then she teaches you how to apply the knowledge that you've learned through books that you read. It was very practical, hands-on, and I like that style of learning.
GoDuke.com: What has been your toughest class at Duke?
MP: Stats psych. Statistics, math, anything with numbers not really my forte.
GoDuke.com: Where do you like to study on campus?
MP: Perkins is my hidey hole. The Gothic Reading Room is a great place to study when you need it to be really quiet.
GoDuke.com: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
MP: Wow, I'm struggling to see myself in six months [laughs]. In 10 years, hopefully married. Maybe I have a kid. Hopefully working for a really great non-profit that's changing people's lives and inspiring people because that's what I like to do.
GoDuke.com: Who has had the most impact on your life?
MP: My parents. I can't pick one of them because they're like a team. My mom being the creative side of things and really inspiring me in a way to do whatever I desire to do but do it in the best way possible. But then my dad being the real hard-working, holding down the fort type of guy - always working really hard and never giving up. And always studying - my dad is always about being on the books ... Between the two of them, they've given me pretty good balance. Allowing me to come to this country and starting a new adventure, I can only thank them for giving me the opportunity.
GoDuke.com: Describe Coach Bustin in one word.
GoDuke.com: Can you cook? If so, what are you good at making?
MP: I recently learned how to cook - in the summer, considering I was living by myself. I can make a mean spaghetti bolognese. Or chicken stir fry.
GoDuke.com: Who would you trade places with for a day?
MP: Michelle Obama. Being a woman in that position and being able to change so many lives and impact so many lives, I think that would be an awesome position. Not because of who she's married to, but because of the amazing, influential position that she has.
GoDuke.com: Who is your dream date?
MP: Ryan Gosling. I just saw that new movie of his that came out - "Crazy Love". He looks good in that [laughs].
GoDuke.com: I wish I knew how to ______.
MP: Cook [laughs]. Juggle.
GoDuke.com: Who would play you in a movie?
MP: Cameron Diaz.
GoDuke.com: Which do you prefer - iPhone, Blackberry, Droid or other?
MP: Blackberry but I'm in the process of getting an iPhone.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite restaurant in Durham?
MP: Vin Rouge. They make a mean steak with bleu cheese that's really good.
