DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke field hockey team has two home games this weekend against Richmond and Old Dominion on Friday evening and Sunday afternoon.  Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with senior defender Abby Hassinger to learn more about the Dauphin, Pa., native.

GoDuke.com: What has been your proudest moment at Duke?
Abby Hassinger:
Definitely this past year, coming in with a new coach in Pam, who we love, and just coming together. It was a brand new start for us, and coming in as an upperclassmen we really made it work.

GoDuke.com: What is your favorite part of being a Duke student-athlete?
AH:
Everything! The community that student-athletes have, the support system, and getting an education at Duke really can't be replaced; so all of that together.

GoDuke.com: What is the most misunderstood thing about field hockey?
AH:
The rules. The rules are constantly changing so it's not only difficult for fans to watch, but also for us and refs.

GoDuke.com: Tell us when you first started playing field hockey.
AH:
In seventh grade, my mom made me to go a tryout. And I was so miserable. I didn't want to go, and I complained and I complained, but it was the best push I ever had from my parents for making me go.

GoDuke.com: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
AH:
I think I wanted to be a little bit of everything when I was younger... baker one day, doctor the next. But around high school, I figured out what I want to do and that's Speech Pathology so that's what I am on now.

GoDuke.com: What was your favorite food as a child?
AH:
I love my mom's chili and any time my dad grills.

GoDuke.com: Who has been the biggest influence in your life?
AH:
My whole family. My parents have been such a fantastic support system, make it to every game, and I feel so fortunate that they are able to do that, but my grandparents, my aunts, and my uncles have all been fantastic, so I don't think I could pick just one.

GoDuke.com: If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?
AH:
Definitely help my family out, my cousins, maybe pay for some of them to go to college, definitely donate some, and then save. Go on some vacations.

GoDuke.com: If you could play any sport other than your own, what would it be?
AH:
I would definitely be a golfer. I love to golf. I wish I was a little bit better at it, so maybe after I graduate.

GoDuke.com: Do you have any hidden talents?
AH:
No, I am a terrible singer...hmmm... I am really good at braiding. I don't know if that counts as a hidden talent though but I braid like everyone's hair.

GoDuke.com: Anything on the iPod that is embarrassing?
AH:
I have heavy metal; some Rage Against the Machine, some Godsmack, but then I also have slow R&B, I've listened to some Usher before, so I have a pretty big range everyone makes fun of me for it.

GoDuke.com: Any words of wisdom to pass along to freshmen or future Blue Devils?
AH:
I think coming in your freshman year you are all over the place, you want to fit in and make new friends, but you figure it out and just the patience in it. You grow so much when you come to college both on the field hockey field and as a student-athlete so I'd say just take your time, enjoy it all, take it in, because when you look back on your memories, I can't believe it is already my senior year. I have done so much already so it has been great.
