Duke Closes Out Regular Season Against Virginia

No. 22 Duke vs. No. 7 Virginia

DURHAM, N.C. - The 22nd -ranked Duke field hockey team (7-9, 0-4 ACC) finishes its regular season at home against the No.7 Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.  The Blue Devils are 4-5 at home this season, and have won three of their last four games in Durham, N.C. Duke's Last Time Out
On Friday, October 19th, the Blue Devils topped California, 2-1 at home in overtime off a goal by junior Paula Heimbach. The goal was set up by Nielsen's shot off a penalty corner.  Her shot was saved by the Golden Bear's goalkeeper but the rebound bounced to Heimbach who was able to bury her first career goal to lift Duke to the win.

The Blue Devils were down early in the match but evened the score 1-1 in the 32nd minute when junior Emmie Le Marchand fired a shot from the top of the arc on a penalty corner. The goal was Le Marchand's 11th of the year.

Facing Virginia (14-3, 3-1 ACC)
Virginia owns a 29-16 record overall against the Blue Devils, and are 8-9 overall in contests played in Durham.

Duke and Virginia met twice in 2011 separated by only a week, with each team tallying a victory. The first meeting last season came as the final game of the regular season on Oct. 29. In that game, Virginia was able to edge the Blue Devils in penalty strokes. Days later on Nov. 3, the two teams met again in the first round of the ACC Tournament. Duke claimed this matchup 3-2 seeing goals from Le Marchand, Jessica Buttinger and McKay Ross to advance to the semifinals and eventually the championship game.

Blue Devils in October
Over the past ten years, the Blue Devils have been consistently successful in October. Since the 2003-04 season, Duke has amassed a 54-21 (.680) record in the month of October.

Le Marchand and Nielsen Moving Up the Ranks
Le Marchand has tallied 11 goals and five assists on the season giving her a team-leading 27 points. With her season, Le Marchand has moved into 13th place on Duke's individual career points list with 91, while Nielsen has moved into a tie for 34th on the all-time list with her 47 career points. Katie Grant currently owns the record with 223 career points.

In addition, Le Marchand has moved up to a tie for 11th place on the career goals list with 38.

Blue Devils in the Second Half
The 24th-ranked Blue Devils have shown an aggressive mindset after the halftime whistle this season, outshooting opponents in the second half 112-83, while also creating more opportunities on penalty corners by a margin of 66-46. Over the last five games, the Blue Devils have scored nine of their 15 goals after the halftime whistle.

Duke in the NCAA
As a team, the Blue Devils are ranked 32nd in scoring average (2.47), 19th in assists per game (2.31), 20th in penalty corners per game (8.0) and 27th in points per game (7.44).

Duke in the ACC
Le Marchand ranks in the top ten in a number of statistical categories in the ACC including shots (5th, 53), shots per game (5th, 3.31), points (7th, 27), points per game (8th, 1.69), goals (5th, 11), and goals per game (6th, 0.69). She is also 35th in the NCAA in points per game and 34th in goals per game.

Blazing also ranks third in the ACC in saves per game (3.64) and fourth in the ACC and 34th in the NCAA in goals against average (1.88).

The Blue Devils are next slated to play in the ACC Tournament Nov. 1-4 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
