Hello from Duke Field Hockey!

North Carolina’s thick August humidity always signals the beginning of preseason practice. As a native North Carolinian I know the air announces a fresh start, a new beginning and an uncertainty of what the coming season will hold. But this year that mystifying feeling is different. THIS August, while still enchanting, it feels like the magic is less mystical and more concrete. I am surrounded by teammates who amaze and inspire me. I can see the desire they all have. It is a desire beyond wanting a championship; it’s the desire to do the work needed to get us there. THIS team has demonstrated an eagerness to work.

After two weeks, 48 hours of practice, three rounds of run tests, two scrimmages, a relaxing team getaway and funny picture day, our first game week of the 2013 season is officially here. This is the first time in several years that we have opened at home, which seems to add to the air of excitement for everyone! I know we must take each week and each game one at a time and have the self-control to focus on the task at hand. We’ve worked to make championship behaviors into habits – to make working hard a habit, to make hustling a habit, to make winning a habit, to making being CHAMPIONS a habit.

Since this is my first game week as a Blue Devil, I can’t say for certain what the rest of the week will hold. I will follow the lead of the coaches and our returning lettermen. One of the reasons I came to Duke was because I knew how much the coaches and players love hockey! I am anxious to see how our mix of passion and preparation produces the kind of performance we expect of ourselves. Hope everyone comes to see us play!
