DURHAM, N.C. – Duke field hockey goalkeeper Lauren Blazing has been selected for first team Capital One Academic All-America distinction, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday.

The rising redshirt junior from Durham, N.C., was named to the Division I Women’s At-Large Team, becoming the first student-athlete in program history to garner Academic All-America honors. Blazing is only the seventh student-athlete at Duke to receive Academic All-America recognition as a member of an at-large team, and the 33rd Duke student-athlete to be selected to the Academic All-America first team since 1959.

Blazing enjoyed a breakout season in the cage during the Blue Devils’ 2013 campaign, earning All-America third team, All-South Region first team, All-ACC second team and All-ACC Tournament Team distinction while guiding Duke to a 17-7 ledger and an appearance in the NCAA championship game. She concluded the 2013 season ranked fifth nationally and first in the ACC in save percentage (.792) and was second in the conference in saves per game (5.88). She posted a career-high 22 saves in a 3-2 overtime shootout victory over previously unbeaten and top-ranked North Carolina Sept. 27, 2013.

A cultural anthropology and political science major at Duke, Blazing boasts a 3.99 GPA heading into the 2014 season. She was previously named a Scholar of Distinction by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, in addition to being selected to the Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad, the All-ACC Academic Team and the Capital One Academic All-District III Women’s At-Large Team.
