THE HAGUE, Netherlands – Maintaining an undefeated ledger through pool play, the United States’ women’s field hockey team advanced to the semifinals of the World Cup for the first time in 20 years with a win over South Africa Tuesday.

The U.S. squad struck first on a penalty stroke near the end of the opening half and featured a high-scoring attack in the second period to secure a 4-2 victory.

“South Africa came out strong from the start,” said U.S. head coach Craig Parnham. “In the second half we really got ourselves in order and responded to a situation that could have gone out of control. We’re pleased with today’s outcome and look forward to a high-tempo match against Australia.”

In pool play, Team USA notched wins over England, China, Germany and South Africa while playing Argentina to a 2-2 draw. Former Blue Devil Stefanie Fee and the U.S. squad will next meet Australia in the semifinals Thursday, June 12 at 10 a.m. EST. The contest will be streamed live on ESPN3.
