DURHAM, N.C. - The 10th-ranked Duke field hockey team fell to 13th-ranked Old Dominion by a score of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Williams Field.
The first half was a defensive battle as neither team would find the net. Duke limited Old Dominion to two shots over the initial stanza, while taking 10, and the Blue Devils out-cornered the Lady Monarchs, 5-2. Senior goalie Caitlin Williams had one save for Duke, while ODU keeper Kelly Driscoll notched three saves.
Four minutes into the second half, Old Dominion’s Katie Ueberroth scored her second goal of the season to put the Lady Monarchs on top, 1-0.
Williams made six second-half saves to keep the Lady Monarchs at one goal, but Driscoll secured five stops for Old Dominion and the Blue Devils would be held scoreless as the Lady Monarchs came away with a narrow 1-0 victory.
Each squad got off nine shots in the second half, as Duke out-shot ODU, 19-11, for the game. Duke held a 7-4 advantage on penalty corners in the final period, going on to out-corner the Lady Monarchs, 12-6.
Williams recorded seven saves for the Blue Devils, while Driscoll made eight stops on the day for Old Dominion.
With the loss, Duke falls to 4-4 (0-1 ACC) on the season, while Old Dominion improves to 2-5 (0-0 CAA).
The Blue Devils travel to archrival North Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 22 for a 1 p.m. start versus the Tar Heels. Duke then returns to Williams Field the following day to host Richmond at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
