SALEM, Mass. -- Duke incoming freshman Jake Shuman advanced to the semifinals of the 106th Massachusetts Amateur Championship at Kernwood Country Club. He fired a one-under 139 to tie for second during stroke play before claiming three match play victories.

In the first round, Shuman opened in strong fashion with an eagle before adding birdies on No. 4-6 to move to five-under. He trimmed another shot with a birdie on the par 4 14th but suffered bogeys on each of the next two holes. Shuman birdied No. 17 and closed with a bogey to end the day tied for the tournament lead with a four-under 66.

In Tuesday's second round, Shuman secured a spot in match play with a three-over 73. He birdied the opening hole at Kernwood CC but carded four bogeys over the next nine holes. He then played the last eight holes at even-par with a birdie on the par 4 11th hole.

Shuman along with John Hadges finished second overall, one shot behind medalist Anthony Vecchiarelli.

Shuman began match play with a pair of victories Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals. He opened with a 3 and 2 win over DJ Hynes. Shuman jumped out to a 2up advantage with a par on No. 2 and a birdie on No. 3. After dropping a hole on No. 5, he moved to 3up with par wins on No. 6 and No. 8. Hynes birdied No. 9 but Shuman carded an eagle on the par 5 13th. He dropped the next hole before finishing off the match with a birdie on No. 15 and a par on No. 16.

In the afternoon match, Shuman fell behind early and remained down two holes to Cody Booska with six holes remaining. He quickly squared the match with birdie wins on No. 13 and No. 14 and moved to 1up with another birdie on No. 16. Shuman parred the next hole and claimed a 2up victory with a par win on No. 18.

Shuman reached the semis with a commanding 5 and 3 win over Jason Short in the quarterfinals. He claimed wins on No. 6-8 to go 3up before closing out Short with par wins on No. 14 and No. 15.

Shuman's tournament came to a close in the next round with a 2 and 1 loss to Doug Clapp. The two players engaged in a back-and-forth duel over the first nine holes with each player winning four holes. Both players carded four birdies during the opening nine holes of play.

Shuman and Clapp matched each other shot for shot from No. 10-14 before Clapp moved to 1up with a birdie on No. 15. After pars on No. 16, Clapp secured the victory with a par on No. 17.
