DURHAM, N.C. - Seven Duke rowers, including All-ACC selections Emily Theys and Kathy Smithwick, earned spots on the All-ACC Academic Rowing Team, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced on Monday.
Representing Duke were Tori Arendt, Sarah Baker, Katie Burke, Rory Erickson-Kulas, Elizabeth Howell, Theys and Smithwick. To be nominated for the All-ACC Academic team, student-athletes must have recorded a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average in the winter semester and have maintained a 3.0 career GPA at their respective schools.
It was the second All-ACC Academic citation for Theys, a junior, and the first for Smithwick, a senior. Arendt, a senior, also appeared on the team for the third consecutive year as did fellow senior Erickson-Kulas. Arendt and Erickson-Kulas are the third and fourth members of the Duke rowing program to appear on the All-ACC Academic Team three times since the award's inception in 2006.
Also appearing on the team were juniors Baker and Burke and sophomore Howell. It was the second year that Baker and Burke appeared on the team and the first time that Howell earned the distinction.
Burke, Erickson-Kulas, Smithwick and Theys powered Duke's varsity eight in 2012 and keyed the boat to a third-place finish at the ACC Championships and victories at the Dale England Cup, Dad Vail Regatta, Knecht Cup and San Diego Crew Classic. The crew also received ACC Crew of the Week honors on April 18 after taking gold at the Knecht Cup.
Theys closed out her career as a two-time All-ACC pick and two-time All-South Region selection and will earn four straight appearances on the ACC Academic Honor Roll. Erickson-Kulas was also an All-ACC pick in 2009.
Arendt and Baker rowed with Duke's second varsity eight while Howell made up part of the varsity four.
