CHERRY HILL, N.J. - The Duke rowing team split competition on Saturday, defeating the Hawks of Saint Joseph's while falling to the Quakers of Penn at the Cooper River double dual meet in Cherry Hill, N.J.

Penn pulled out to a solid lead in the morning competition, taking all five events by a narrow margin, but the Duke rowers were able to power through the afternoon competition against Saint Joseph's.

The Blue Devils swept the Hawks in four of the five races, including Duke's third V8 comprised of four novices: coxswain Emilie Marchetti, Chelsea Sawicki, Shaye Bastien, Allison Beattie, Lauren Jadovich, Leilani Doktor, Emily Hyland, Lauren Baumgartner and Shannon Sims.

The team opened with their strongest group and event in the V8+. Taking a solid, lead the team of coxswain Caroline Kiritsy, Emily Theys, Rory Erickson-Kulas, Alex Japhet, Laura Sciarrino, Grace Cassidy, Katie Burke, Kathryn Lowry and Stephanie Rosser finished the 2,000 meter race in 6:47 flat.

"It was good for us to get our first race experience completed," said head coach Robyn Horner. "We learned a lot from it and we'll be back up in Camden in three weeks. Overall, I think we could have relaxed more and established a better rhythm in the rough water."
