ITHACA, N.Y. - Duke's top boat took second in the women's varsity eight competition in the afternoon match up against Cornell and the University of Rhode Island in Ithaca, N.Y. on Saturday.
In the morning races, Duke's V8 boat of took first in the opening race, advancing to the afternoon final round over Iowa and Bucknell. Unable to power past a steady lead taken by Cornell, the Blue Devils took second in the finals with a time of 7:22.0.
Duke's V4 boat took second in the morning session, advancing to the B finals in the afternoon. The team of coxswain Sarah Baker, Nancy McKinstry, Lissa Glynn, Shannon Sims and Joline Doedens powered to a second place finish as well with a 8:40.9 finish.
In the lightweight competition, Duke's third V8 took first over Rhode Island and Buffalo. The boat of (coxswain) Emi Marchetti, Allison Beattie, Shaye Bastien, Chelsea Sawicki, Lauren Jadovich, Victoria Tsamis, Emily Hyland, Lauren Baumgartner and Elizabeth Howell knocked nearly 22 seconds off their morning time, taking second as well in the afternoon finals with a time of 7:33.8, narrowly missing front-runners, Cornell, by a mere three seconds.
Duke rowing will close out their season on Sunday, May 15, when they take on Louisville and Notre Dame in a Regatta in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
