ATLANTA, Ga. – Luke Bard and Alex Cruz combined on a two-hit shutout to lead No. 21 Georgia Tech to an 8-0 win over Duke in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at Russ Chandler Stadium. The Yellow Jackets (18-10, 6-5 ACC) won both games of the doubleheader on Saturday.
Bard started the game and held the Blue Devils scoreless over 4.1 innings. Bard gave up the two hits and had five strikeouts. Cruz (1-0) then tossed 4.2 shutout innings of relief with four strikeouts to earn his first win of the season.
Second baseman Thomas Smith gave Georgia Tech a 1-0 lead with two outs in the bottom of the second on an RBI-single to left.
The Yellow Jackets added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead 3-0, scoring on an RBI-single by designated hitter Zane Evans and on a sacrifice fly from catcher Connor Lynch.
A five-run seventh pushed the Yellow Jacket lead to 8-0.
Designated hitter Jeff Kremer and first baseman Andy Perez had the only two hits for the Blue Devils (11-17, 4-7 ACC).
Trent Swart (3-3) took the loss after allowing three runs – two of them earned – on five hits in five innings. Swart had three strikeouts in the game. Sophomore Dillon Haviland was a bright spot out of the bullpen, holding the Jackets to one hit in a scoreless eighth.
Duke and Georgia Tech will wrap up the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
